Good amp for practice or small venues,

This review is from: Behringer ULTRABASS BXL900 90-Watt 2-Channel Bass Workstation (Electronics)
I was surprised at 90 watts how much the amp did NOT put out volume wise. For practice or small venues it will work fine. The compact wedge design is great which gives it a "fold back" positioning making it easier to discern the sound. It has two channels but no foot switch connection. This is a glaring over sight for those that want to set both channels and switch back and forth during a song or set. It's even more glaring after the owners manual makes a big deal out of the 2 channel features. To switch you need to press the button on the face plate which sounds like no big deal until you're playing and you need to bend over (remember this is wedge/ low profile design), keep playing your bass and then press the button. It should have come with a foot switch input is the net of it. Not a great amp and certainly not bad. If you're looking for a bass amp that rocks the house this is not it. But it'll work great for rehearsal and studio work. BnB Beatles Depot.

I received this as a gift Christmas of 2010 and it has served me well over the last year. However, like the other reviewers, I was surprised that it was not as loud as I expected it to be.Lo and behold, I received a Bass Big Muff Pi pedal this year and the boost it gives the signal makes a HUGE difference with this amp. The amp cleanly handles the signal, so Behringer must have limited the gain on the assumption that the input signal would be stronger, or in other words, that there would be at least one pedal between the bass and the amp. At the end of the day I am pleased with my amp and pedal. I have a ton of control over the sound/tone, and I can play cleanly at a volume sufficient to make your ears ring.

I bought this amp after reading reviews on Harmony Central. I was, as usual, pleasantly surprised by Behringer. Great range for a bass amp. Sorry but , I've yet to sink my teeth in it, but so far it has everything I need for a "practice amp" for my 5 string Ibenez.I wouldn't do a gig with it unless I had to, but a great small practice amp.

I bought this for my 15 year old son. He has a garage band with his buddys and I'm sure they are all going to be rock stars. He loves this amp. Its not too heavy to hall around and plenty loud to annoy the parents. The price was right.

--I was using 15W practice amps with my Peavey BXP Millenium bass guitar. I jam with guitar guys with 60W - 100W combo amps, and I needed something that could be heard among them. The Behringer fits the bill. When I took it out of the substantial box that it was packed in I was impressed by how heavy it is. Two Behringer decals came with it too. Another nice touch was the metal speaker grate with the Behringer logo screwed onto it. The cabinet itself is covered with a nice, heavy, fuzzy fabric. Two bass holes in the back of the cab allow more air in and out. For playing at home, in a residential area with noise sensitive neighbors, I set the volume on "1". If I turn it up to "2" and turn on the Ultrabass, the windows rattle with the Ultrabass set on 7. I turned the volume up to "5" w/the Ultrabass turned off, and I could feel it in the floors and hear it in the walls. Just as most other reviews have mentioned, I wish that the footswitch was included with the BXL900. It would be handy when jamming, but, unless you're gigging, it's a minor inconvenience. It's too bad, though, as this amp is powerful enough to play small venues. They should at least include the jack on the back of the amp, as it is on the 1800 and the 3000, even if they only offer the footswitch as an option that you can buy separately. The cabinet is cut so that you can tip it back to use it as a monitor speaker. While it's easier to hear it this way when you're jamming with buddies, the bass sound suffers. The sound is much more clean if the amp is sitting flat on the floor. Led Zeppelin's "Ramble On" had two completely different sounds to it, depending on which way the amp was sitting. Same with "Dazed and Confused." The bass was a bit harsh when it was tipped back, and it had the appropriate John Paul Jones warmth when it was flat on the floor. The EQ and Channel 2 with the Bass Shaper are nice features, but, what I really appreciate is the clean channel on Channel 1. I'm using a Digitech multi-effects pedal with my bass, so I set the EQ to my liking, put it on Channel 1, and all of the sounds that come out of the amp are the sounds that the Digitech was making in my headphones when I made the different presets. The Digitech multi-effects pedal sort of eliminates the need for Channel 2 and a footswitch, but it's still nice to have the option, esp. if you're using more than one bass. Even without the Ultrabass turned on, the bass lows are incredible. I love the sounds I get out of this thing, whether I'm playing clean on Channel 1, or on Channel 1 with my Digitech, or straight through to Channel 2 w/distortion/bass shaping. No problem being heard amongst my friends anymore, great bass sound, and no distortion unless you want it to. When UPS dropped this on the step, my wife asked me, "What? Are you going to start a band and go gigging?" I replied, "No, but if I wanted to, I could with this amp." She rolled her eyes at me. :D I'll probably eventually upgrade to the BXL3000 just because of the footswitches and the Compressor settings, but, I think the BXL900 is going to last me a good long while.

Good for practice. The regular channel is nice and clear. I run it with a Tech 21 preamp and it's very responsive. The enhanced channel is a little limited and at least with my current setup, the Ultrabass feature has too many overtones to be useful. If you were performing, you'd probably want preamps / effects pedals to handle these features.
