Freedom To Move About The Cabin,
By SerenityFL (Miami) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beige 4 Steps Pet Dog Cat Step Stairs (Misc.)
I actually got this for my cat. I've had my cat for 12 years now and in the past 6 months, she has been showing signs of struggle when trying to jump up to my bed. Some days she makes it, some days, she just doesn't have it in her and sits by my bed meowing to be let up. Sometimes it's not easy for her to get down, either but getting down is easier for her though, than getting up.
The more I saw her struggle, sometimes with her paws on the top of the bed, her reaching and trying so hard, the more I felt horrible and guilty. So that was it. It was time to get her some steps. I got this as a gift although I did all the research before choosing these steps. I had read through several products reviews and saw that many pet steps available were cheap plastic covered in cheap, thin material and many people were disappointed. The last thing I wanted was cheap plastic that would break or cheap carpet material that the pets would destroy in a matter of days. I kept going through the pages here at Amazon and found a few that I liked. This one was chosen out of the three because it was available and the price was great. I looked real hard at this product over several days and decided, based on the weight alone, that it must be made of wood. I figured it was like a cat scratching post; it used the same material. I received it and put it together. The first thing I noticed is that my guesses were right. It is not cheap plastic. The base and steps are wood and covered in a nice carpeting material. The stems, (I guess they're called), could be very hard cardboard or hard plastic tubes, (not sure), but are not in the least bit flimsy whatsoever. I put the steps on the stems and then screwed the stems in to the base and it was a nice, secure, snug fit. There is no wobbling at all and the entire structure is incredibly sturdy. Putting it together took less than 5 minutes. I brought it over to the bed and it was the perfect height. I have a regular bed, box spring, mattress on a frame as well as memory foam mattress topper AND a pillow top mattress topper. My bed gets a little high with all of that but the steps went right to the top. I went and got the cat and showed it to her. She sniffed around for a minute so I picked her up and put her on the steps. That's all that was required. She took to the steps right away. She now knows that she can get up and down from the floor to bed and bed to floor whenever she darn well pleases and does not need to meow at me every 5 minutes when she's changed her mind, yet! again! She seems very content that she can do this on her own again and that's the biggest reward of all. Bonus!! The other cats enjoy these steps as well. They don't need them but they love winding around under them, hopping on them, using them as a jumping off point to the cat tree a few feet away and the cat I bought this for likes to sit on the top step, towering over the other cats on the floor and swatting at them as they pass by. Through all of this, the steps don't move an inch. Perfect. Edit-December 27, 2010: In August, I found myself the owner of two abandoned puppies. They are now about 8 months old. One is smaller, about 20 pounds and very dainty. The other is about 35-40 pounds and a clown. At times, I do allow them to sit up on the bed with me while I'm on the computer and they, too, use the steps to get up on the bed. The dainty dog walks gracefully up the steps, just like the cat does. The clown dog thunders up these steps like the floor was on fire when I tell him to "get on the bed" yet through all of this, these steps have continued to hold up well. The material can take the traffic, it's easy to clean any accumulated fur, and despite clown dog flinging himself up and down the steps, there are no tears, the structure is still very secure and steady and it continues to act just as well as it did on the first day. I continue to recommend these steps and am still delighted with the purchase.

Surprisingly heavy duty,

These cat steps surprised me. At the low price, I assumed it would be very cheap quality, but it's not. For some reason, they made these steps so strong that I'm pretty sure they could hold my weight (and I'm fat). Also, there are metal fittings where the pieces fit together with very heavy duty bolts. This thing would have no problem supporting the heaviest dog securely. The quality of the carpet covering, fit and finish, etc. is better than I expected. They even included in the box an allen wrench to assemble it. You gotta like free tools!
The top step is 22 inches high, which is the same as our pretty high bed, so it's tall enough. The only thing I didn't like was that the bottom step is 10 inches high, which is a touch higher than ideal for our older kitty. (It's hard to see in the product photo, but if you look closely you'll notice that the distance from the floor to the first step is a bit more than the distance between the other steps.) But after thinking about it, I see why they did it that way. The bottom step is just high enough so that a kitty can crawl under it. This allows the area under the steps to be a little play area. If you need tall pet steps, our binkie says "buy this kind". Or maybe she wants me to scoop her box, it's kinda hard to tell.

I got these stairs for my cat. I agree with the other posters that it is very sturdy and made pretty well. However, I was disappointed by the quality of the material. I was expecting carpet, and it was covered in a very cheap material. My cat definately won't be able to use it as a scratching post. You can feel the wood right through the material. But we can always cover it with a better material or even carpet. Other than that, it is made well and was delivered very promptly.

There are some problems, not for short leg dogs,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Beige 4 Steps Pet Dog Cat Step Stairs (Misc.)
We have older dachshunds ( short legs ) The first stair is 9" high from the carpet, ( by comparison ) the average house stair is about 6" high so it's too hard for them to use
Here is the list of what was wrong and how I fixed it. The instructions are worthless you need to figure out how to assemble it 1. The first stair is too high at 9" from the floor. I had to make a step out of wood and attach it to the frame of the stairs at the 4" level. Now it's a 5 step stair instead of 4 2. The pillars wobble ( especially the 2 taller one )back and forth no matter how tight I make the allen head bolt from underneath. I had to add braces ( 1.5" angle braces from Ace hardware ) and #10 screws .75" long to support the pillars to keep them from moving. Use a cordless drill to drive the screws into the base and into the pillars with the angle brackets A cat would probably be ok, they are better jumpers than short leg dogs and lighter on their feet The design idea is OK...but the way they put it together is very cheap. Only after my modifications did the dogs use it

Fantastic!!,

I ordered this for my aging Chihuahua. The steps are SO sturdy & the perfect size. Some stairs (check carefully) are only 12" high?? That is only a foot off the ground lol. I needed my dog to reach my tall bed, and these are wonderful. The carpet is plush & makes her feel secure (no slips). I wasn't really concerned with how they looked, I just wanted steps that were moderately priced & sturdy- but I must say, these look AMAZING! Both my Chi's just love their new stairs.

Solid, heavy steps for our aging kitty,

These steps are nice and solid, and won't move and frighten a nervous kitty. Thumbs up on that. I gave them 4 stars because the carpet is really cheap stuff and made a mess while assembling and the first steps seems disproportionately high.
It's a solid and inexpensive fix to a common problem - a more gentle way to let our aging cat get up and down from the bed without having to lift her. The instructions are terrible, so let me help you out. Match posts by height, and screw into bottom of steps (carpet facing away from post). Start with lowest step, push screws through bottom of base (carpet up) and into bottoms of post. OK, repeat 4 times. Not hard, and no tools needed - 8 screws and an allen wrench included. It's a solid buy for the price, and I am impressed with how heavy it is.

My 15 year old 20 pound cat thanked me for the steps. Easy assembled. Price was ok. The top step with the long post would not tighten securely but was able to strap them to the adjacent post with tie wraps(thought about beige duct tape:)My cat is happy. I would reccomend this step.

This just arrived today. The instructions didn't specify what order to put it together so I put the legs on the steps first, then attached them to the base, starting with the shortest step first. It took less then 10 minutes to put together and feels pretty sturdy. I bought it so my cat could get to a window sill to eat that was out of reach of the dogs. It worked great and the high first step seems to deter the dogs (we have 2 beagles).

Good inexpensive stairs for cats. We have a bed that sits very high and this comes close enough to the top for our older cats to easily hop up. Very easy to put together. Is nice for the price and better made than I had expected but definatly not your high end carpeted stairs. Would rec.

Great step stairs for our elderly, limping cat!,

Great steps for our elderly, limping cat and at a much more reasonable price than the other steps. At first our cat thought, "What is this?!" and then realized it was for her and now loves using it. It puts less stress on her arthritic hip since she does not have to jump off our high bed but, instead, stroll down like an elegant "aristo-cat"! Looks great next to our bed, too.
