Book Description

Odyssey Beijing February 1, 1999
The capital of China for most of the past seven centuries, Beijing lies at the heart of a nation of more than a billion people. A wealth of historical monuments bear witness to the city's fabulous past -- the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Ming Tombs. But there is also much that is new to intrigue the visitor. No city reflects more clearly China's continuing struggle to balance its historical legacy with the challenges of opening to the outside world.

This guide to Beijing provides up-to-date information on the many new shops and restaurants, together with essential practical information for the individual visitor. An overview of the city's extraordinary history provides a key to understanding some of the complexities of this impressive capital.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Odyssey guide to Beijing is ideal, and might exhaust even the most determined sight-seer . -- The Royal Society for Asian Affairs

These handsome, well-edited books from a Hong Kong-based publisher cover places few other guidebooks go.... The writers are particularly well-chosen....Odyssey fans tend to be adventurous travelers with a literary bent. If you're lucky enough to find an Odyssey Guide to where you're going, grab it. -- National Geographic Traveler, February 2000

About the Author

William Lindesay spent nine years traveling in China. In 1987, he journeyed on foot along the entire length of the Great Wall, a story recounted in his book "Alone on the Great Wall." He also retraced the Long March, recording his adventures in "Marching with Mao: A Biographical Journey." Lindesay has contributed to National Geographic Traveler and the German magazine Merian. He and his wife, Wu Qi, a history graduate from Xi'an North West University, have revised Odyssey's guidebooks to Xi'an, the Silk Road and China.
