Health, identity and difference,
By Robert (West Lafayette, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 'Being Alive Well': Health and the Politics of Cree Well-Being (Anthropological Horizons) (Hardcover)
Adelson's work on "being alive well" is excellent. It tells the story of the Cree sense of health, well-being and strength, both physical and psychological. For the Cree, being well is tied up with being free to practice their traditional ways of life on the land, and with the well-being of the animals and of the land itself. All of us can gain by a better understanding of how closely our survival and thriving are related to the environment, to being with others in supportive ways, and to maintaining our sense of identity. The impact of the whiteman continues to threaten the Cree and the rest of humanity, through our lack of understanding of difference and, consequently, our apparent disregard for people and for the earth.
