Grade 2-4-Two very basic introductions. In Being Blind, the author discusses braille and taped books, but does not make clear exactly how braille is written and some of the uses a blind person may make of it. She talks about guide dogs and devotes one page to watches, but does not cover some of the newer innovations in use today. Sports are mentioned, but it is implied that those played by the blind are sedentary, when in fact many engage in more active sports. A short paragraph discusses how sighted people may help a blind person, but no mention is made of some of the common mistakes. This book seems aimed at a child coming in contact with a blind person for the first time. O'Neill explains what diabetes is and what is needed to control it. Insulin is discussed, and the importance of diet and exercise is stressed. The need to check blood sugar is mentioned, but not how it is done. In both books, posed full-color photographs of smiling young people or related objects appear on every other page. Strictly additional purchases.
