Book Description

Life Transitions September 2008
This inviting book addresses the questions and concerns of newer believers and will inspire those looking for a refresher on what it means to be Christian. Wherever the readers are in their faith journey, they'll find their questions addressed with biblical, theologically sound answers written in an engaging and conversational style. The easy-to-use format allows readers to identify and find their most pressing faith concerns. At the same time, when read in its entirety, Being Christian provides a solid topical introduction to Christianity. Relevant Bible passages are used throughout the book to enhance the reader's understanding of how Scripture informs its answers. Among the subjects discussed and deeply explored are God, the Bible, the church, sin, what it means to be saved by grace, how to discern God's voice, how to deal with guilt, and much more. Designed for use by individuals, it's also a great resource for small groups and new believers' classes

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Arterburn (Every Man's Battle series) and Shore (I'm OK—You're Not) have designed a thoroughly comprehensive and refreshingly engaging primer on foundational Christian tenets. Readers from across the spectrum of Christian experience (newbies, veterans and seekers alike) will find this biblical question-and-answer format compellingly practical. Although it is written from an evangelical perspective, other Christians will learn from it, too, and appreciate the authors' clear approach. The book addresses specific, often thorny questions: how is God simultaneously Father, Son and Spirit? Why does God allow evil to exist? Why must Christians pray for their enemies? How are they to understand fallen Christian leaders? What is original sin? And how do confession, repentance and Christ's atonement and resurrection play into the Christian's daily faith journey? Arterburn and Shore further enhance their excellent guide with wit, humor and gentle pokes at the church's foibles. Whether individuals are just wondering about God or serious in their religious pursuit, this book is a valuable resource. (Sept.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Being Christian, September 20, 2008
This review is from: Being Christian: Exploring Where You, God, and Life Connect (Life Transitions) (Hardcover)
As a relatively new Christian (just shy of 2 years), I found this book to be well worth the purchase price. The two editorial reviews offered by Amazon are entirely accurate in their praises for the book. It's really well-written and the content flows extremely well, despite being in a question-and-answer format. That surprised me -- how well the authors were able to succinctly answer a wide variety of questions so seamlessly. The tone is reverent but not heavy, and even quite playful at times (which shouldn't be surprising if you are at all familiar with John Shore's writing style). The answers are straighforward, thorough and clear, and yes, they really do address just about everything you'd think to ask. Appropriate Bible references are given for nearly every answer. In the month I've owned the book I have both read it end-to-end and returned to it for random answers. The sections outlining the basics on choosing a Bible translation and a church are outstanding treatments of two very important topics. Overall, this book is practical, relevant, informative and entertaining. I'm donating a copy to my church's library, and there are a few folks on my Christmas list who I think would enjoy it as well.
