4.0 out of 5 stars Nice instrumental guitar work, June 22, 2003

I heard some of Michael Hewett's music on NPR's Hearts of Space one night. So I did some research and wound up buying the CD. Much of the disc is very pleasant new age type acoustic guitar picking with kind of a southwest flair. "Nagual" is really nice with its accompanying flute sounds, "Sedona" indicative of the southwest flavor, and "I Cover the Abyss with a Trance" is a standout with its violin and cello (the cello works great with just about every song on the album). While there are some rough spots (sometimes there is too much finger squeaking, the last song has long interludes of just a humming tone, and parts of "Transmission" with its electric guitar flourishes make it sound like infomercial music) listening to this album is like drinking a glass of water when you are really thirsty. It just goes down great. Don't be put off by Hewatt's yoga background: though I'm sure it's fine to do yoga to, it's just really nice to listen to. It would be great to play if you own some kind of cool shop, or while you're reading, or just in the car to take some stress out of the daily commute.

This is a true instrumental masterpiece. Listen to it while you are reading or doing yoga or just listen. There is mystery here and deep longing and beauty. This music resonates and expands, is mystical and beautiful. Share it with all your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars spiritual music for all occasions, August 19, 2002

As with only a few others, Michael Hewett's music transcends the limited yoga market for which it is most prominently promoted. This CD has the depth and sophistication that will endure well beyond the daily practices of yoga. He has a range of influences extending form Paul Winter Consort to Pat Metheny, allowing the music to soar at times and to calmly soothe at others. And the musicianship is worth the purchase by itself, as Mr. Hewett employs many techniques to acquire the rich and various sounds. There are few CD's with the variety and cohesiveness that I could think of reccomending. And I advise a good set of headphones to fully appreciate the excellent recording.

This an excellent cd which is even better when listened to with a pair of headphones. I was introduced to this cd during a yoga class however I feel that the quality of the compositions and the skill of Michael Hewett transcend the yoga studio. Often, I find myself dancing to this music. It will transport you to another reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Masterpiece, September 18, 2002

This is a truly fantastic CD. It's the sort of CD that you play in the background because it's instrumental but yet you find yourself turning it up and listening to it. There's so much going on. I play CD's in the studio constantly, all day long, and this is one that get's noticed and played and played again. Clients always ask about it. The guitar work is reminiscent of Steve Tibbets but with a bit more variety. I'm wearing this CD out.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want more!, August 21, 2002

This review is from: Being In Dreaming (Audio CD)
This is a recording I will return to frequently. Each piece is a jewel with many sparkling facets - lyrical themes, engaging rhythms and virtuoso performances. The engineering standards employed in making the recording are clearly of the highest level. The attention to sonic detail is most clearly revealed with a good set of headphones. This is a serious piece of work exhibiting wide-ranging accomplishment in composition, arrangement, performance and recording of acoustic guitar based music. It deserves to be heard. Listen and share it with your friends. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare for a Gorgeous Expeience, August 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Being In Dreaming (Audio CD)
Michael Hewett's second record, "Being in Dreaming" is a beautiful piece of work--this is acoustic instrumental music at its best! Thought provoking and rich, the compositions take the listener on a deep spiritual journey. What makes this recording unique is the sheer prowess of Hewett's technical ability on the guitar, combined with the depth and emotional range of the compostitons. From the achingly haunting melody of "Nagual" to the Southwestern flavor of "Sedona," to the high energy of "Transmission," these recordings draw you in from the first measure to the last, and leave you wanting more. Of special note are the epically gorgeous "The Ever-Widening Circle," and "I cover the Abyss With a Trance," which feature beautiful cello and violin sections that will break your heart.

Whether you are a guitar afficionado, or are simply looking for a wonderful record to share with friends over dinner, "Being in Dreaming" has something for everyone, and shouldn't be missed.

This CD is an amazing piece of work. It's one that you can play over and over and never tire from hearing it. Michael is so talented. This definitely transcends "yoga music" - he is a musician, a guitar artiste. Anyone would like this album...I'm not kidding. It's just that good. It's one of my all time favorites.
