Excellent Sustainable Philosophy,
By Dave Alber (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Being Is Enough: Collective Self-Help for a Sustainable World (Paperback)
`Being Is Enough' by Dr. Doug Brown is the only economics book that I finished reading in only two days. Once picked up, it's a difficult book to put down. Brown writes in an engaging non-technical style. In this short and very readable sequel to his `Insatiable Is Not Sustainable', the author confronts, from an economic perspective, the most important issue of the day, the recognition of our insatiable civilization of global proportions.
I found Brown's approach to global issues to be especially relevant, for I believe that `economics' is the ultimate valuation of things in the present global civilization. So, by tackling the problem of an insatiable "be all you can be" culture from an economic perspective, Brown is taking the bull by the horns. He shows that solutions can be compatible with economic self-interest, which in our civilization, represents "the bottom line". However, we will have to revolutionize our understanding of self-interest along sustainable lines. For ecologists, sociologists, activists, and victims of globalization who oppose the economic system's inherent injustices will only achieve marginal success until they can demonstrate that the most reasonable economic philosophy necessitates a change in the system's core perception around sustainability. This thought-provoking book presents a strong argument for people to help transform the economic system of insatiability to a sustainable economy. Not only does the book provide the historical and philosophical arguments for why the system must change, but it also offers sound and genuinely workable solutions as coming from a shift in perception, the core value that `Being Is Enough'. This perception is applicable to people at the personal, grass roots, and corporate level. Important and provocative, `Being Is Enough' offers a hopeful alternative to our ultimately self-destructive cultural worldview. I highly recommend this book. |
