5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, Insightful For the Gay Parent
Webb-Mitchell has written a wonderful guide to help the gay parent navigate life with children. From situations involving family, school, the religious community and friends, he shares his family's story with humor and insight. I read the book in an evening and any gay parent will feel supported and resonate with the challenges he and his partner have faced. I have had...

2.0 out of 5 stars a bit disappointing
as much as i might want to like the author as well as the book, i have to say i didn't get much out of it. and i found myself wondering who the audience was. hey i'm a gay parent too and it's not always easy so i'm curious about others in a similiar situation, especially someone of faith. but most gay parents are going to be well aware already of the information contained...

This review is from: On Being a Gay Parent: Making a Future Together (Paperback)
I have had the opportunity to meet the author's children and they are incredibly gifted young people due to the support and love of their parents. This is a book that is long overdue! Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRAVO, DR. WEBB-MITCHELL!, February 16, 2008
This review is from: On Being a Gay Parent: Making a Future Together (Paperback)
This book has inspired me to write my first review for Amazon.com. A wonderful follow-up to Webb-Mitchell's previous self-revealing book "Follow Me", the author invokes insight into what it is like to be a gay CHRISTIAN parent, being honest to one's self and to his or her life's spiritual journey. As a Greek Orthodox, heterosexual single woman who is a performing artist, as well as an educator, I am moved by Dr. Webb-Mitchell's unapologetic candor and wisdom, along with some much-needed anecdotes within these pages. One can only hope the book will evoke true reflection and help educate ALL readers, be they heterosexual, homosexual, people of all religious faiths, or those who choose not to follow formalized religious denominations. The book is a reality check of the world in which we live TODAY and the world we face TOMORROW. I have witnessed and empathized with so many of my homosexual friends with their struggles, and inner-turmoils for many years; this book humbled me to become aware that I am nowhere NEAR understanding my loved ones' everyday issues. Being a parent, a Christian parent at that, is challenging enough in a heterosexual world; I thank Dr. Webb-Mitchell for this offering to those who are willing to learn more about these issues, and to glean the opportunity to be brave and kinder to themselves by discovering, or in some cases strengthening their abilities to be true to the ONE who matters......hmmm....Bravo, Dr. Webb-Mitchell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!, February 1, 2008
This review is from: On Being a Gay Parent: Making a Future Together (Paperback)
OK, now that I've gotten that cliche' out of the way....
This book provides great solid advice that is valuable to ANY parent.
It's just that if you saw a straight man in a coffeehouse reading it, drinking a half-caf-ristretto-soy latte, his macho would be gone.
HOWEVER, his credibility as a concerned human being, not fearing commitment, and wanting to do the best by a child would be through the roof.
Thank you, thank you for a solid, clearly communicated guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical, easily read, must read book for all gay parents, June 15, 2008
This review is from: On Being a Gay Parent: Making a Future Together (Paperback)
When I came out to my children in 1992, I searched the library for anything that might help me with this difficult and frightening event in my life and that of my children. There was nothing on the library shelf!

What Brett Webb-Mitchell has so brilliantly created is an easy reference guide written in a conversational style. This book is extremely helpful for anyone on the path of being a gay parent. Each chapter addresses the author's own personal experiences on ten different and critically important aspects of life we, as gay parents, can and may times do experience. The author is 'right there with you' openly sharing his life while helping to give you guidance plus many helpful and insightful moments as you read almost every page.

This is a book that should be read by not only gay parents but anyone who sees themselves as someone wanting to understand the challenges of those not in the 'main stream' of the american experinece of parenting. The more we share Brett Webb-Mitchell's book with others, the deeper the understanding we will have of each other and the more help we will provide to those on the difficult path that he has and continues to travel.

Congrats to the author for writing a book that has been so sorely needed for so many years. Now future generations of gay parents will have the guidance/advise that has been missing for so many years. Now those who truly wish to understand the life and challenges of gay parents have a place to go.

Personally, I recommend this book without hesitation. Buy extra copies and give them to your friends!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All of God's Children, February 22, 2008
This review is from: On Being a Gay Parent: Making a Future Together (Paperback)
My first reading of Brett Webb-Mitchell was "Follow Me." I discovered that Dr. Webb-Mitchell is a poet in the disguise of a prose writer. His style is beautiful to read. He opens his heart and describes his conflicts, his sorrows, his surprises, his loves, and his joys.

"On Being a Gay Parent" is a past-due publication with insights for parents, teachers, pastors, and anyone interested in the lives of all of God's Children. Several times during my reading I was reminded of a Sunday Evening Worship Service that I attended at the Metropolitan Community Church in San Francisco. A young man testified how is pastor father would have nothing more to do with him when "came out." He then tore my heart out when he sang "In this very room there's quite enough love for one like me."

The only down-side to this book is the title. It is for everyone who believes that there is, indeed, quite enough love.
