5.0 out of 5 stars The advice in this book is a treasure, waiting to be found.
In my humble opinion: Being Good/Buddhist Ethics For Everyday Life...is a "Must Read", for all beings.

It's a practical guide on "Being" and "Being a Good Human Being". Not just a list of rules and laws. It's written in modern language and gives sound advice on matters that trouble all of us, sometime in the course of our lives: anger,...

I found the title to be misleading. This book is more instructional than an exploration of the complicated subject of ethics. It presents basic Buddhist ethical understandings, but reads like a rule book. In "everyday life" we experience complex and challenging ethical problems, and this book does not address such issues. I gave it three stars, thouugh, because...

In my humble opinion: Being Good/Buddhist Ethics For Everyday Life...is a "Must Read", for all beings.

It's a practical guide on "Being" and "Being a Good Human Being". Not just a list of rules and laws. It's written in modern language and gives sound advice on matters that trouble all of us, sometime in the course of our lives: anger, greed, friendships, helping others, illness and much more.

The adivce in this book is a treasure, waiting to be found. You don't need special conditions to follow this advice, just an open-mind.

As you read Being Good you will feel its' truth, its' warmth and you will understand...it's a very special gift given to us unconditionally by a very special being: Master Hsing Yun

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful present, February 15, 2000
This review is from: Being Good: Buddhist Ethics For Everday Life (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a friend's birthday, thinking it would make a nice gift. When it arrived, I glanced through it and found I couldn't put it down!

It's full of sage advice for handling everyday frustrations - dealing with anger and jealousy, judging others, staying focused on the bigger picture -- delivered in a warm, compassionate style that is easy to read and follow.

Needless to say, I now have to buy another copy for my friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars What America needs now..., June 24, 2000
This review is from: Being Good: Buddhist Ethics For Everday Life (Paperback)
is ethics, and this book is an excellent overview of ethics from a Buddhist perspective. It is straighforward and unpretentious, and a great source of inspiration. I've read a number of Buddhist texts, and this is the one I keep coming back to. There are 33 chapters, each devoted to a particular ethical issue, such as "Overcoming Greed," "Not Killing," and "How to Manage Wealth." Since the chapters are brief (usually 3-5 pages), I try to re-read one of them every day as part of my practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb presentation of Buddhism's basics, January 29, 2002
This review is from: Being Good: Buddhist Ethics For Everday Life (Paperback)
As a novice in Buddhism, I found this book to be an exceptional presentation of the basics of the Buddha's teachings. The text is broken down into short chapters on key subjects, such as friendship, lying, making money, helpings others. This format makes the book very useful, one that can be read over and over for either daily meditations or for review to help you re-focus your behavior. It also is very helpful in presenting key sections of important sutras in the Buddha's teachings. A wonderful and highly recommended book.

This review is from: Being Good: Buddhist Ethics For Everday Life (Paperback)
I found this to be an excellent book of advice on how to live a reasonable, ethical lifestyle. I found reading this book to be a real 'discovery' of new ideas about ethics, presented in a very supportive realistic manner that might help the life and happiness of anyone.

It presents basic Buddhist ethical understandings, but reads like a rule book. In "everyday life" we experience complex and challenging ethical problems, and this book does not address such issues. I gave it three stars, thouugh, because it's simply helpful to be reminded, in another author's words, of the soundness of Buddhist principles and their application.
