5.0 out of 5 stars Lena is as great as ever!!!
Lena Horne is one of the finest singers around today. One of the few original entertainers who sing classic pop and jazz. Only Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, and Anita O'Day who were all in her league are still performing. This her most recent effort is spectacular. Lena is still going strong her voice pure and beautiful, her style still as sassy and stylish as ever,...

Lena Horne is one of the finest singers around today. One of the few original entertainers who sing classic pop and jazz. Only Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, and Anita O'Day who were all in her league are still performing. This her most recent effort is spectacular. Lena is still going strong her voice pure and beautiful, her style still as sassy and stylish as ever, and she's more loose and improvisational now, than ever. This cd is recommeded to fans of Lena as well as people who have enough class to get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A National Treasure, October 1, 2005

We are all so lucky to have Lena Horne in our lives. She paved the way for so many other brilliant artists like herself. This is a woman who can teach us how to live with her phrasing and subtlety. She makes you laugh and cry at the same time. This is a simply beautiful CD displaying her mature richness and grace. May she live on and produce similar music when she gets to be over 100!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, but fabulous - Ms. Horne did it again!, June 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Being Myself (Audio CD)
Once again Ms. Horne has released an album, no mean feat at her age. And although we are only treated to 38 mins. of song, it is pure bliss. Having been a fan for years I had my doubts about this album, but these were quickly blown away.

I shall listen again and again..........

5.0 out of 5 stars Her BEST cd ever!!, December 7, 2003
This review is from: Being Myself (Audio CD)
Whoever wrote that Lena's singing is "painful", is an idiot. Lena posesses the most beautiful voice today. She sounds elegant and beautiful thru this whole cd, I am 16 years old but I truly enjoy this blues cd, with Mike Renzi's jazz groups. The best version ever of A Sleepin Bee is on this PERFECT cd. Lena doesn't show her age, she shows her wisdon, and if you aren't pleased by this you are msot likely a miserable person. I am luscky that I have grandparents who took me to see all of these singers when I was a preteen, they took me to New York and we saw Lena, I was 11, and Lena was great, and so is this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, but sweet, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Being Myself (Audio CD)
Don't listen to the few negative reviews. As you can see the majority reviews are positive. Does she sound like she did when she was 40, no. How about 60 no. But she sounds just fine. The material is great, better than her first Blue Note album, or at least more upbeat and happy. I think people have unrealistic expectations. Aren't we the ones who say the world is too caught up on youth. Those who make bad comments will oneday be old and that doesn't mean you should be put out to pasture. If you have realisic expectations you will see she sings better than most 70 or 80 years old. Her voice is deaper and clearly some notes have been lowered, but it is most definately not painful. If it were that bad Blue Note never would have spent money to produce it. Please give Lena's last full album a try. (when is comes back in print) Lena won for NAACP's best Jazz Artist in 1999 because of this album. Her first and only studio album to win an award.

5.0 out of 5 stars FOREVER A CLASS ACT!, January 24, 2002
By
This review is from: Being Myself (Audio CD)
Even if Lena Horne's voice has lost a bit of the range and resonance of her younger years, her timing, interpretation of lyric and consummate professionalism in still perfection. The wisdom, power and freedom of her delivery are reflective of a woman that, despite her icon status, truly knows who she is and flaunts it without reserve. The smoldering fire and sense of irony that she brings to the more bluesy cuts are that of a "woman of color" who, as a pioneer in both music and motion picture industries was offered limited opportunities, fought, suffered and has prevailed. Her jazzy renditions of well-worn standards are fresh revelations that rise above nostalgia. This CD is an intimate musical conversation with a "living legend" that too often has not always received the exposure and recognition that she so richly deserves.

1.0 out of 5 stars PAINFUL, August 29, 2003
By
This review is from: Being Myself (Audio CD)
PLEASE do not buy this CD, it is absolutely PAINFUL to listen to. A very poor introduction to Lena and it will not satisfy anyone who loved her from the 1930s through the the mid-1980s. Lady & Her Music was a great show, she was 65 then and "still had it", but not here. The woman is over 80 here and sounds every day of it, why she had to make this CD is beyond me. If she needed cash she should have done more of those Gap commercials. The singing on this CD, most of the songs are great standards, is pathetic. WHY is it these older stars do not know when to quit? I'd give this negative stars if I could. STAY AWAY!
