Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Children who collect baseball cards will appreciate the 14 stars featured in B‚isbol! Latino Baseball Pioneers and Legends by Jonah Winter. Striking full-page portraits accompany biographical information on standouts such as Jos‚ M‚ndez, the "first Latino baseball legend ever," known as "El Diamante Negro" (the Black Diamond) and Roberto Clemente, "The Pride of Puerto Rico," who died in a plane crash helping to aid Nicaraguan earthquake victims.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Until recently, information about Latino baseball has been scant. Winter presents one-page biographical sketches of 14 players who played between 1900 and the 1960s, including Dolf Luque, Crist-bal Torriente, and Mart'n Dihigo. He includes a couple of fascinating facts after listing pertinent details such as years played, main teams, position, and similar stats found on the back of baseball cards. Each profile faces a colorful acrylic painting on a background that resembles an old card. While some pictures (Bobby Avila, Minnie Mi-oso) are not as clear as others, most enhance the text. Because few of these players are represented in other individual or collective biographies, this title will be a welcome addition to any baseball collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars After Finishing This Book You'll Love Baseball Even More, July 17, 2001

(REAL NAME)
If America is the melting pot, then baseball is an extension of that cauldron. Winter's books -- including "Fair Ball," a similar look at pre-Jackie Robinson Negro League stars -- are gems that illuminate athletes, musicians, artists and more. The writing is sharp. The illustrations here are reminscient of baseball cards. And the subject matter, minority baseball greats, has been up till now overlooked. These volumes will give your child -- and you, too -- breadth in understanding America's pastime as well as an understanding of pop culture. We laud our heroes to the point of nausea. Winter delights us by heralding the unsung heroes of a not so long ago but very distant era.
