From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Beginning with a recitation of Banneker's impressive achievements, this informative biography immediately engages readers, who learn that, because he lived "so long ago, there are no complete records about his life." (This point and a few others could use some fuller explanation.) Nevertheless, his life story is well told, beginning with his birth in 1731, with interesting tidbits of information that give a larger picture of "America's first major black man of science." While the book will be useful for reports, the format is not particularly user-friendly. There are no chapters, subject headings, or sidebars to highlight information. A time line and numerous photographs and reproductions in black and white and in color are included.
