Standard Desiccant Automated, Standard Desiccant Gas Purge Vacuum
Manual monitoring and operation. Moisture is absorbed from air in the unit by using a desiccant. Once the desiccant is 'saturated' it must be regenerated through heating, or replaced. Electric fans and heaters continuously regenerate the desiccant to prevent saturation and to automatically maintain a low humidity environment. A slow steady flow of inert gas (often dry nitrogen) is provided. Air and moisture are removed by the chamber by use of a vacuum pump.
Flexibility to use any type of desiccant (silica gel beads, activated charcoal, etc) based on economics and convenience. Convenience, requires minimal monitoring. Achieve relative humidity at a much faster rate. Best for total dry storage or if air could be damaging to material being stored.

I bought this to de-air RTV and resin and ended up ordering two of these to get a complete and usuable unit. Both were missing parts: the first was missing the neoprene gasket and the second desiccator contained two bottoms! The odds of two having missing/mismatched parts seems to indicate a problem at the factory.

The Good:
The desiccator shells themselves are quite thick and seem durable.

The Bad:
The neoprene gasket is too small for the groove it sits in and it easily pops-out. You must be very careful to get the gasket to sit and then carefully place the top on. The timing is not ideal when your hands are contaminated with RTV or resin and the neoprene gasket slips out. I plan to try grease to see if it will stay better, or ultimately use some Piobond or similar glue

The valve that comes with it is not high quality and leaks. I had to run my vacuum pump continuously to maintain the vacuum.

Despite the quirks, these do work and are considerably cheaper than a bell jar.

I received this item for my birthday, and it DOES hold a vacuum, if you can get the gasket in place, and if you leave it hooked up to a running vacuum pump... The valve leaks, the O-ring leaks, seems everything leaks, I have tried vacuum grease with no success. The product description says this thing should still be holding a good vacuum after 24 hours, yeah right. Mine loses all vacuum in a matter of minutes, I expect better products than this on Amazon, especially considering this thing is supposed to be a lab product. I will say that in it's defense it would make a wonderful cereal bowl and is alot larger than I expected. I looked inside the valve and can see plastic "burrs", which are probably what cause it to leak. Also speaking of burrs, they did a poor job of finishing the plastic shelf that comes with the unit. I would recommend buying something from a better brand if you do important work, especially considering I bought this for hobby use and it's just about useless.

The stopcock leaks a few inches of mercury a minute without a constant vacuum being applied. The o-ring can be difficult to keep in place but is adequate for my uses.

Can't find any other way to contact anybody; so, airing my grievances here!!!
This item is not as advertised. It is not Bel-Art part number 420120000.
The stopcock valve has been removed that is a standard element of the proper assembly.
I am sure the seller will point to the fact that a picture of the modified assembly has been taken and included that does not show the valve; and, that is correct.
But, if you purchased this item by part number anywhere else, you would receive the complete, unaltered assembly.
Even the literature enclosed indicates the valve.

Otherwise, it functions as required.
Only, I was cheated out of a $5 valve. (presumably sold by the seller to someone else for additioanl profit)
Such are the risks of purchasing from other than the proper source. All to try to save a few bucks!

I bought this based on some other reviews for use as a vacuum chamber to de-air silicone rubber molding compounds and epoxy resins for a work project.

As other reviews note, it's pretty sturdy, but the o-ring likes to jump out of its groove and the petcock has a tendency to loosen and leak a little. It generally won't hold a useful vacuum without the pump running, and certainly not for 24 hours. It does allow me to completely de-air 275 grams of Smooth-On Mold Max XLS II in 5 minutes or so when using a 5CFM pump.

Would I buy again? Probably not... I think I'd just do DIY vac chamber with a section of 8" PVC, some polycarbonate sheet, and silicone caulking.

Product works but after a few uses the valve has a slow leak so you need to keep pulling vacuum.

After a couple years of light use (purchased in Feb 2012) I gave up on this product.

Firstly, it could never hold a vacuum because the parts were not airtight. The valve is based on a piece of rigid plastic tubing which is simply pushed onto a small nozzle on the lid of the device. By itself this was never airtight. I obtained a better seal by sealing it around the nozzle with silicone, but the desiccator still began to lose pressure the moment the vacuum was turned off. I am guessing this is because all of the nozzle parts are plastic, so closing the valve completely airtight is simply impossible.

The too-small o-ring was always too small, so I had to stretch it every single time I used the product, and then each time I took the lid off, it popped off. It's minor, but that wastes valuable time. One of the times that I stretched it, it snapped. I poured silicone into the void on the jar but couldn't recreate the seal. I ended up using the original gasket and filling the hole with silicone putty (mack's ear plugs, in fact) and was able to still use the desiccator, but the putty was messy and had to be reapplied with each use. Repeated attempts to find a replacement o-ring were a failure. The Bel-Art site did not list the o-ring under replacement parts. To be fair - I never called. But that's because I had already realized that I could do better, and by then I was ready to buy a new vacuum chamber.

In January of 2015, a year ago, I purchased a replacement vacuum chamber 2 Gallon Vacuum Chamber to Degass Urethanes, Silicones and Epoxies. This is a 5-star vacuum chamber.
