5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, January 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bel Canto (Audio CD)
I would like to take great exception to the review which appeared in Grammophone. Yes we are all aware of what Joan Sutherland didn't bring to her portrayals. We can say that of absolutely EVERYONE! What she did bring to Lucrezia is firm tone and a dramatic sense that sometimes escapes her in the studio; not to mention the gorgeous voice that we all know and love. And I must admit I am a true fan of Dame Joan's AND able to listen through the faults to one of the true vocal forces of nature. As far as Donizetti is concerned, his formulas worked for him. Listen to Parisina d'Este, or, especially, Gemma di Vergy and you will know why he is so pre-eminent. Today we do not have the singers with the vocal education, sense of style, imagination and sophistication that are needed to bring these operas to life. There it is; a gross lack of any sophistication on the part of many vocalists today.
