2 beautiful AOR albums for the price of one, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Belief/Beneath the Shining Water (Audio CD)
Dare is a melodic rock band formed by former Thin Lizzy keyboardist Darren Wharton, who proved to be a terrific vocalist as well. The band was active sporadically since 1988, but they took their sound in a different direction with their 2001 album Belief and the 2004 follow-up Beneath the Shining Water.
These albums barely qualify as rock album at all. Rather, they're pure AOR (maybe adult contemporary?) albums. Instead of the genre's traditional big guitar hooks and catchy choruses, Dare went with a far more laid back, atmospheric sound with tranquil melodies, compelling lyrics, warm vocal delivery, and occasional Celtic elements. There is some very subtle but very impressive guitar work as well. The only real comparison I can offer is post-Fish Marillion (especially
This Strange Engine) and maybe Crowded House. The change in style may be a bit jarring to longtime fans, but these are some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful albums you'll ever hope to hear.
If you want to rock, you'll probably want to skip these albums in favor of one of Dare's earlier works. If you don't mind a more laid back AOR sound, you're in for a real treat with Belief and Beneath the Shining Water.
This budget-priced 2-disc set collects Belief and Beneath the Shining Water, the latter including a bonus track called "Real Love". It's a pretty song, and makes a nice addition, but if you already own both albums it's probably not enough to make replacing them worthwhile. If however, you're missing one (or both) of these albums, this affordable reissue is a great way to remedy that.

Different Approach - Great Outcome By A fellow Irish Rocker, February 6, 2009
This review is from: Belief/Beneath the Shining Water (Audio CD)
I have been a DW fan for many years (during the Thin Lizzy days), and while this is a different musical appraoch, it maintains a slight rock edge, which is where Darren Whartons roots are (I believe). To have played with the great Phil Lynott must be an honor in itself, as he was well known for playing wih some of the greatest rockers on the planet.
Great textures and moods are brilliantly played by this three piece band, with a Celtic rock edge making it unique for sure.
