2.0 out of 5 stars Uninstalled after an hour, June 28, 2008

There was some suspense in this game -- I spent the first twenty minutes trying to figure out which was worse -- the game design, the scripting, or the voice acting. They are all dreadful. (The plot is also silly, but that problem pales in comparison to the others.) You can right click to activate any "live" object in the room (as shown to you by the spacebar). On 90% of the objects, the character says that it wouldn't be a good idea. Click. "No." Click. "That's not a good idea." Click. "No." You can only imagine how much fun this is. Click. "No." Or better yet, your cursor hovers over the piano. Click for information. The character steps over to it. "That is a piano." "That is a red fire hydrant." Most of the live objects have no relevance, no use, and no informational content.

Two stars instead of one because at least it didn't crash. Although I only played for an hour before I came to the conclusion that I will never play it any more and uninstalled it. And I was being generous.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Betrayal" is a Good word for this reviewer, June 27, 2008

I was in anticipation over this pc game. The hype seemed to be worth waiting for. I have purchased other Lighthouse games and they seamed pretty entertaining and interactive. The dialogs in this game goes on and on and music is played throughout the entire game. There is not a scene without this b-rated music droning throughout your playing area. The main character has an etremely annoying voice for a man. They should have matched the voice with how the character looked. The good thing about the long drawn out dialog is that you can press your space bar and get through it quickly. The cursor is another glitchy thing. Some times you have to go out an area come back to retrieve the object they want you to gather. The puzzles were not intricate and can be easily accomplished. The most difficult part if there was one was to get the words from the notebook and placed them into the communicator to send mail to other characters and sometimes using those notes on other characters or inventory items to complete an area to move on in the game. I liked that you could be several players doing different things throughout this game. I did learn some things about the Vatican. Don't know if all of it is true but it was interesting. I have been to the Vatican so this held an appeal for me in a game. Save, save, save your games throughout or you will be disappointed when the game stops working for some unknown reason or glitch and you have to go through all the mundane activities again. You have unlimited saved games. It takes maybe 7 hours to get through the entire game and I have only gone back to the game to see if I can beat my time. Using the items in your inventory can be a little mind boggling as you try to figure out which goes with what to produce a positive response. Some times you have the objects but you can not just them haphazardly together or the character will keep saying something about "I left my pen knife at home" That was frustrating. The ending is sorta vague. You get to go to France and Italy but the characters in France "The kids" speak American English and the Italians characters did not prove authentic either. The subtitles with some characters are done in some dark background with dark purple font..very difficult to read It comes in 3 cd's so this had me temporarily excited. I feel perplexed by the cost and what it had to offer. But to each his or her own. I have surely played many well thought out pc games and I give this like 2 stars. I feel "Betrayed" by Lighthouse. It is not worth the $29.95. buy it used it you must then you will not feel so cheated. Happy gaming!

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, June 29, 2008

Like the reviews before me here, you can't figure out which is worse - the plot, the gameplay, or the voice acting. Too bad because this game was so hyped and had such potential. I've come to a glitch in Venice and can't progress in the game, and I actually don't care if I finish it anyway. Sad. The graphics are decent, but what's the point if the game is lame? Take another recent game that I would give 5 stars to, Diamonds in the Rough, put together with a cookie cutter game engine - I couldn't stop playing it because the story, the music, everything was good, and you didn't care if the stiff figures moved by inching along the screen with no body movements. The only reason Belief and Betrayal was produced, it seems, is to ride on the coattails of the DaVinci Code, and even then, it has come out a few years too late.
