Book Description

October 20, 2005 0199276315 978-0199276318
Belief in God answers two questions: What, if anything, is it that Jews, Christians, and Muslims are agreeing about when they join in claiming that there is a God? and What, if any, prospects are there for rationally defending or attacking this claim? A highly accessible and engaging introduction to the philosophy of religion, this book offers full coverage of the key issues, from ideas about God's nature and character to arguments for and against his existence. Author T. J. Mawson makes striking new claims and defends or attacks established positions in original ways. His conversational style, lively wit, and enlightening examples make Belief in God simultaneously instructive, thought-provoking, and enjoyable to read.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Anyone working in the analytical tradition of philosophy of religion, at any level, would find something of interest in the book: both as teaching material (I know from experience how much students enjoy some of the thought experiments), and as a contribution in its own right."--Philosophy

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, December 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I really enjoyed Mawson's book. I think is well written and organized, with clear explanations (most of it). The examples from the book; although some of them far-fetched; are very illustrative and funny, which in my view, contributes to the learning process.

On the down side, I would suggest to incorporate the Argument from Moral Experience and to develop a new approach to the evil problem, which I found not as clear as other parts of the book,

4.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy of Religion ( a beginners book), October 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Belief in God: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion (Hardcover)
This book is actually very interesting, Mawson sets out different views on God's existence and being. I thought this book was a beginners book because I bought it for a course, it is a bit hard to understand and I think there might be simpler beginner books on the topic. It is a good read all around, it will take a few rereads to fully understand what is being said for those who are totally knew to philosophy.
