5.0 out of 5 stars Rare, Passionate, and Solid
Wind-Up Records has a good talent for finding good talent. Most of their best artists are under-rated, however. For instance, CREED is their staple artist, their pride and joy, but I feel that this Big Dismal is not a "recycling" or a copy, or even similar to all three of CREED's CDs (which I own, love, and have memorized). I feel very strongly that this CD...

1.0 out of 5 stars Recycled
This is a very very dissapointing first release by Big Dismal. This Cd sounds like everysingle other band on Wind up Records(creed,12 stones) There isn't a single bit of originality in this whole album. This band will quickly be collecting dust on many music shelves.

I feel very strongly that this CD is BETTER. The songs are easier to empathize with, because they are interpretable in several ways. "Remember (I.O.U.)", the first single, could be contributed to God, family, friends, teachers, almost anybody that could have an influence on life. They are a Christian band, but they don't preach.

In short, there is not a track on this debut album that is not utterly fantastic. Several young bands make the mistake of having songs sound similar and run together to make for a boring, lacklustre CD. There is not a track here that emulates the others, yet Big Dismal manages to have a sound of their own.

I give this CD 5 stars without any hesitation. This is for people who don't like their rock to be pointless or volume-driven, but hook and riff driven. The band is young, but they make a good impression. And I "Believe".

I hardly ever take the time to review a CD because most are not
worth the time. THIS ONE IS AN EXCEPTION. I listened to the song
Remember on the radio and fell in love with it. I have to agree
with a previous review, this is one of the few CD's that I can
put in and listen to from start to finish. Add this to your
collection YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique blending of influences, November 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Believe (Audio CD)
At hearing the first few seconds of this disc I, like many of the reviewers here, thought, "Another Creed knockoff."
Not so! (Thankfully)
After listening to the entire disc a few times it's obvious that the main similarity to Creed is the lead singer's vocals. But -- dare I say it? -- Big Dismal's vocals are better, more versatile. He's got a slight raspiness in there that reminds me more of Russ Taff or Third Day's Mac Powell, than of Scott Stapp.

Musically, within the majority of these songs, even the heaviest rockers, there is the distinct presence of an acoustic guitar and the slight influence of southern rock. Think Third Day circa their "Conspiracy No. 5" disc but with a heavier, thicker rock sound. The "acoustic-ness" doesn't overshadow the heavy modern rock vibe this CD has, but really makes for a nice, even beautiful ("Missing You"), blending of the styles. Very unlike the slick, ultra-polished, pop-radio-friendly rock of Creed.

Don't make the mistake of mis-judging this CD as Creed clone. There are many other subtle influences and versatility that make this disc a unique and awesome blend acoustic and modern rock. Don't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Wind-up Goodie, July 22, 2005

Just some great chill rock, not too heavy not too soft. Maybe a very slight country kinda sound in the vocals. Not a bad song the whole way through.

I hadn't ever heard of these guys before I saw them at a festival, but once I did I knew that I had to have this cd. It has a great crunchy rock groove going, but at the same time they're deep and can do the ballad just as well. Check this one out! The live show was great as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, February 13, 2004

This band is absolutely amazing. This is probably the ONLY cd I own that when I put it in the cd player, I actually listen to the whole cd without skipping a song. Initially the band does have a similar sound to Creed. But after really listening through the cd, I have to come to find that this band is working to establish their own sound. I saw the band live (they sound amazing live by the way), and not only were the songs off this cd amazing, but they played a few new songs that weren't on this cd, and they were just unbelievable. This band is definately on its way to the top. BELIEVE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tribute from the Future, January 3, 2010
This review is from: Believe (Audio CD)
You may have noticed that all but one review is from 2003, the advent of the CD. But here I am in 2010 wondering "What happened to Big Dismal?" I know what happened and sad Big Dismal is no more. Every song is really really good and "Reality" is my favorite. But ... and bare with me for a moment, my favorite songs by them are "Rainy Day" and "Reason I Live" on the Passion of the Christ: Songs (Original Songs Inspired by the Film). For some reason I see these other 2 songs as a whole since they debuted within a year of each other, roughly. And they only made 14 songs combined. My life is not uncommon, but unique. And music has the uncanny ability to influence behavior. When I listen to "Rainy Day" and "Reason I Live" I am whisked away, even if for a just moment, to place of meaning and peace. Since the other reviews are 7 years removed and mine being outside a relative timeline, I felt an entitlement to offer my gratitude to the people who were Big Dismal. Your music and memory will be running through my mind for many years to come. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest band i've ever met, May 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Believe (Audio CD)
This album is really great. I purchased it because I was going to attend a concert at which they were playing. I liked the songs;but, seeing them play live brought the music to live. The members of this band are truly great and sincere. My friend and I were able to meet the bassist, Gary at the concert. He came and personally thanked us for showing support at the concert. It was a truly memorable experience and I will never forget that night. I give this cd the highest rating and say that everyone should go out and buy this cd because these guys deserve all the successes that come their way. Big Dismal Rocks!!!!!!!
