Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The Windy City alt-metal provocateurs Disturbed surprised everyone when their debut, The Sickness, sold over 2 million copies. Here, once again, the band's imperious chrome-domed vocalist David Draiman bleats out the band's messages of nonconformity, self-empowerment, and individuality with a passion and ferocity that hasn't been heard since the '60s--though there's little room for peace, love, and understanding in Disturbed's world. Instead, Draiman laces the band's message with equal parts rage, disgust, and menace, all delivered in a thundering voice that alternates from the lyrical to the grizzled. Ozzy Osbourne has called Disturbed the "future of metal," and he might be right; they have almost single-handedly plucked the genre out of the aggro dung heap and fueled it with intelligence. The band is just as aggressive here as on their debut, but they've lost some of the dark angst, and as a result have created a melodic, psychically lighter album, despite the fact that the CD kicks off with "Prayer," a conversation between Draiman and God, inspired by the singer's grandfather's death. --Jaan Uhelszki

5.0 out of 5 stars A great (but different) follow-up, September 20, 2002
By A. Heuer (Manhattan, KS USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When Metallica released Ride the Lightning, no doubt people complained that it wasn't as heavy or aggressive as Kill 'Em All. And already some poeple are complaining that this follow-up is too different from Sickness. So let's say this right off the bat: Believe is much less heavier than Sickness. It's pace is more controlled, it's energy less aggressive, and it's lyrical content less violent (and more hopeful). For those of you who like your bands to always sound the same, you will not like this release (you can go listen to Pantera). But for those of you who like to hear a band grow and explore from album to album, than this is a work of art that you will greatly appreciate. Don't get me wrong, the album rocks at times (Prayer, Liberate, Rise). But Draimen is talented enough (and smart enough) to know that his incredible voice is an asset and that the possibilities his range offers should continue to be explored musically by the band. Nowhere is this more obvious (and beautiful) than in the closer, Darkness, an acoustic track with a simple piano line and a haunting cello line. Who knows where the band will go from here, but the open-minded music fan can't help but be excited.

5.0 out of 5 stars Believe in your own choices, September 18, 2002
By Dru (jersey) - See all my reviews
The second album for an artist shows if you can still stay in "The Game". Disturbed definitely beat that game with "Believe". Believe itself is softer than "The Sickness", but lyrically, it's much more beautiful and spiritual than the freshman album. The reason so is because of 9/11 and the death of vocalist David Draiman's grandfather. I have listened to this album two times through so far, but I don't think I'm at the point of reviewing every song. Some songs remind me of other bands due to certain riffs (Like track 3 reminds me of a Tool song, can't place my finger on it though) and certain beats are still as hard as the first album. The Limited Edition version is definitely worth getting over the regular one because it comes in a beautiful dark red casing with a booklet enclosed that features artwork, pictures, and lyrics. There's also the bonus DVD that has the video for "Prayer", the making of the video, the making of "Believe" in the studio, an updated version of the band's origin, and clips from Disturbed's DVD "M.O.L.". For [$$] more, you should pick it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as Sick as the Sickness, October 2, 2002
By Mad Dog "maddog6969" (TimbuckThree, Tennessee) - See all my reviews
I gave The Sickness 5 stars for the raw power of its message and the punchiness of its delivery. Believe is possibly even stronger in the message department, but is lacking in punch. It's possible that it will grow on me over time, but the disc does not seem as uniformly solid as The Sickness. I don't mean this as a put down - 4 stars from me is a very high rating. I'm just being comparitive. It's possible that the lack of punch here is just the way that the band interpreted the subject matter, but it also could have come about in the mixing and production of the music. I've listened to this quite a few times on good computer and car systems, but until I get time to sit down at the big stereo with both discs, it will be hard to tell.

The editorial reviewer above mentioned says there is little room for peace, love and understanding in Disturbed's world. I disagree. Check out the liner notes, which show that the band is strongly rooted in the love of each other and their families.

The bonus DVD and excellent packaging of this version was well worth the extra bucks to me.
