Believe in your own choices,
By Dru (jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Believe (Special Bound Edition w/Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
The second album for an artist shows if you can still stay in "The Game". Disturbed definitely beat that game with "Believe". Believe itself is softer than "The Sickness", but lyrically, it's much more beautiful and spiritual than the freshman album. The reason so is because of 9/11 and the death of vocalist David Draiman's grandfather. I have listened to this album two times through so far, but I don't think I'm at the point of reviewing every song. Some songs remind me of other bands due to certain riffs (Like track 3 reminds me of a Tool song, can't place my finger on it though) and certain beats are still as hard as the first album. The Limited Edition version is definitely worth getting over the regular one because it comes in a beautiful dark red casing with a booklet enclosed that features artwork, pictures, and lyrics. There's also the bonus DVD that has the video for "Prayer", the making of the video, the making of "Believe" in the studio, an updated version of the band's origin, and clips from Disturbed's DVD "M.O.L.". For [$$] more, you should pick it up.

Not as Sick as the Sickness,

I gave The Sickness 5 stars for the raw power of its message and the punchiness of its delivery. Believe is possibly even stronger in the message department, but is lacking in punch. It's possible that it will grow on me over time, but the disc does not seem as uniformly solid as The Sickness. I don't mean this as a put down - 4 stars from me is a very high rating. I'm just being comparitive. It's possible that the lack of punch here is just the way that the band interpreted the subject matter, but it also could have come about in the mixing and production of the music. I've listened to this quite a few times on good computer and car systems, but until I get time to sit down at the big stereo with both discs, it will be hard to tell. The editorial reviewer above mentioned says there is little room for peace, love and understanding in Disturbed's world. I disagree. Check out the liner notes, which show that the band is strongly rooted in the love of each other and their families. The bonus DVD and excellent packaging of this version was well worth the extra bucks to me.

Its a bit more polished than the sickness.....Less grunting and seething and a little more lyrically based almost melodic in some cases....The album it itself is a coming out for a band which set their roots with the sickness and now have evolved into a hard, but driven music maker....Dave belts out the tunes but shows his incredible range through most tracks, and the drummer MY GOD who is this guy and where did he come from truly gifted with great tempo and drive....This band is not a nu-metal here today gone tommorrow band, they arent a trend follower but a trend setter....This album is a testament to that I'm not going to rate the individual tracks because the album ties together as a masterpiece BUY IT NOW.....However I will say Liberate and The Mistress are really strong tunes....

You had better Believe....,

I am quite impressed with Disturbed's new works...and this leather packaging with metal emblem and extra DVD is well worth your money here...Disturbed did seem to lose abit of their ferocity as posted...but kept all in all the same sound..Draiman's signature sound the wooha and hoos still made it in this album....the music for the most part was still moderatley heavy...the high points of this album really stand out..but there are softer parts especially song 12...it's all in all slightly less sonic than their debut...but it's still every bit as good in my opinion....if you liked the 1st Disturbed album "The Sickness" then "Believe" shouldn't dissapoint you......but if you're looking for something terribly heavy...this probably isn't for you....all in all this is a great follow up to one of the only MTV friendly bands I like...Disturbed are unique that's for sure....BELIEVE= 4 1/2 stars...(by the way the video to "Prayer" is not MTV friendly that's why they included it this package)

Finally...a sophomore effort to "Belive" in. Disturbed has come to save the world and swallow your soul. A non Satanic band with a true Satanic message in keeping with the teachings of Anton LaVey...Believe in yourself, you are your own GOD. The first heavy metal band worth listening to in a long time, Disturbed combines uptempo assaults on your eardrums and then cools you down with accoustics. This album is sure to appease the hunger that we have all had since The Sickness. Consider the Sickness to be at full Epidemic proportions the moment the rest of the world gets ahold of this CD/DVD set.

A great (but different) follow-up,
By
This review is from: Believe (Special Bound Edition w/Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
When Metallica released Ride the Lightning, no doubt people complained that it wasn't as heavy or aggressive as Kill 'Em All. And already some poeple are complaining that this follow-up is too different from Sickness. So let's say this right off the bat: Believe is much less heavier than Sickness. Its pace is more controlled, its energy less aggressive, and its lyrical content less violent (and more hopeful). For those of you who like your bands to always sound the same, you will not like this release (you can go listen to Pantera). But for those of you who like to hear a band grow and explore from album to album, than this is a work of art that you will greatly appreciate. Don't get me wrong, the album rocks at times (Prayer, Liberate, Rise). But Draimen is talented enough (and smart enough) to know that his incredible voice is an asset and that the possibilities his range offers should continue to be explored musically by the band. Nowhere is this more obvious (and beautiful) than in the closer, Darkness, an acoustic track with a simple piano line and a haunting cello line. Who knows where the band will go from here, but the open-minded music fan can't help but be excited.

The Believe album by Disturbed is always a welcome addition to any fan's collecction. The Special Bound Edition comes in a special book and includes a DVD. The book's pages include each of the separate symbols, one per page, that make up the full symbol seen on the front. The DVD has a few sneak peeks of other works, and was a nice extra to add to the collection.

First of let's talk about the album, then we'll get into all the cool special features. I like this album and "The Sickness" equally. There are great songs on both and there are songs that can be skipped over on both. But despite all the things they have in common they are two very different albums. The Sickness was more of a "nu-metal" album. this is more traditional metal . There are songs on here heavier than what you've heard before (intoxication, rise) songs way softer and beautiful then you've heard before(darkness) and songs that could fit perefectly on "The Sickness" (Awaken, Prayer). The special features here are astounding. The case itself is worth the money. It's a red leather case with a metal beLIEve symbol on it. The album comes with a bonus DVD that shows you the controversial "Prayer" video, the making of the album, and clips from their M.O.L. DVD. Well worth the money. A great album by itself, but it's worth the extra cash to get the limited edition.
