Outstanding performances,

Listen to Anthropology and you will hear outstanding performances by both jazz greats. Other standouts include The Song Is You and Invitation. From top to bottom, this is an excellent example of the artistry of these two artists. The interplay between the artists is brilliant. Highly reccomended for fans of Bebop and Swing oriented Jazz music.

Absolute Mastery,

This review is from: You Must Believe in Swing (Audio CD)
This is a stunning duet recording of two masters in jazz music, in what feels like a very natural and relaxed session. Make no mistake - Mr's. McKenna and DeFranco play some ferocious lines and generally drive new life into these mostly old tunes, but the feel is that of old friends having a conversation and edging each other on to new heights on usually familiar territory. Listen to "Invitation" alone and you will be dumbfounded by the absolute mastery of instrument and material these two distinguished artists bring. When Buddy finishes his feature solo on "Invitation" (worth the cost of the disk alone), the lack of applause is surprising.. . then I remember this is a studio album. That's the feel of this record - it's almost like you are there in the room. Dave McKenna is a force - a staggering piano talent - playing rhythm, bass and melody all at once. And Buddy's phrasing, tone, creativity... it's just amazing. If you are at all interested in duets, big piano playing and/or sinuous horn playing, this is a must-have.

Jazz virtuoso of the clarinet,

Buddy Defranco is one of the all time virtuosi of the clarinet--a genius really. This album is splendid but I have to admit that the relentless stride style piano gets a little tiresome.
