3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre.
I read this one several months ago. It had an interesting plot, funny moments with the wizard & his girlfriend, but somehow,
something about it annoyed me, that I can't quite put my finger
on.

I think maybe it was how the heroine never seemed to get past her way of talking like a cab driver. It just grated on my nerves to no end. Also, there is...

I had never read a book from Victoria Alexander before, but after this one, I will definately be heading to my local library to find more! Her writing style is one that I've always enjoyed from some of my favorite authors, mainly because the heroine has a razor-sharp intelligence. The witty dialogue between Tessa and all the characters in the book were laugh-out loud funny, and I especially loved her affectionate "pet name" for Galahad -- Big Guy. Being only 5'3" myself, I really love tall guys, and Sir Galahad, like he was supposed to, stole my heart. If you love the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, along with the "Wizard Extraordinaire and Counselor to Kings" Merlin, then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - This book could not have been better, December 31, 1999
I absolutely loved this book. I had to stay up half the night finishing it. The stroy just flowed from one chapter to the next. In fact, I hardly noticed that it was 1:30 a.m. when I finished it. Tessa is such a strong female character and sure gives Galahad a run for his money about his Middle Ages beliefs. You could not ask for a better book to curl up with in front of the fire on a cold winter or rainy night. A truely wonderful book. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this and you too will BELIEVE!, September 11, 1999

This is the first Victoria Alexander novel I've ever read and I ***adored*** it! It is laugh-out-loud funny - one of those books that you probably don't want to read in a public place - unless of course, you enjoy causing a scene. The dialouge between Tessa and all of the characters was fresh and witty. The minor characters were incredibly well drawn and and the sub-plot between Merlin and Viviane was delightful. And let's not forget the Big Guy himself. It would be very easy to fall in love with Galahad! Great job Victoria!

something about it annoyed me, that I can't quite put my finger

I think maybe it was how the heroine never seemed to get past her way of talking like a cab driver. It just grated on my nerves to no end. Also, there is something about this author's writing style that I wasn't particularly fond of, but to pinpoint it is difficult.

There are so many other worthy time travels out there to read.
I would recommend "Enchanted Time" by Amy Elizabeth Saunders,
"A Perfect Love" by Sandra Landry, and "The Bushwaeked Groom" by
Eugenia Riley, before succumbing to reading such a mediocre-at-best read like this one. All of those stories have depth, characters you care about, humor in the right places, etc., and even time travel that seemed a bit more plausible than this one did.

Now, with that said, I am not oppossed to reading more of Victoria Alexander's work in the future, however, I'm not in a huge hurry to do so.

1-10 scale: 9.0 at best

1.0 out of 5 stars Total disappointment, December 15, 2009

I am an avid romance reader and like many, have my favorite authors - typically I have enjoyed Ms. Alexander's books. This was, unfortunately, a total disappointment. The language of the heroine was ridiculous and distracting. The entire story seemed forced and Merlin's motivations made no sense to me whatsoever. I'm all for suspended belief, but this was more than that! In general, I would recommend Alexander, but honestly - avoid this one!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother, September 1, 2010
This review is from: Believe (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought it would be a Regency novel too. I was not only disappointed, but bored. I bounced back and forth between wanting to continue and wanting to give up. Finally I gave up. Tessa was so annoying. She was like a 15-year-old, complaining about everything, and insisting that she was right and blah blah blah blah. "Like, you know? That's so fake, and all in my imagination. Oh my God, I'm insane! Like, totally that's the greatest thing I've ever heard, and I sooo need to go home so and teach the subject that I hate the most..."

Yawn. So immature and hard to relate to. Also, there was hardly any romance here at all! Just skip this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!! I didnt expect this..., January 17, 2010
This review is from: Believe (Mass Market Paperback)
I really find this book kind of bad. I bought this book because of all the 5 star reviews and I regret it. I really didnt even understand when the two fell in love. I also found Tessa's language to be kind of over the top. I honestly dont think a real modern day person speaks with that much slang. The writer was kind of pushing it. Tessa kept calling Galahad "BIG GUY". That really bothered me. It was like as soon as I was starting to feel the emotion of the character she said these words and I felt like she wasnt talking about the love of her life. She was talking about a dog or something. I even found myself scanning pages to see which ones I could skip without missing to much information. I give this book a 2 just because I think that when she had to leave him in the end was kind of touching. The way they loved eachother. I am not into the magic stuff. Its just not realistic. This was my first book from this author, but I dont think I will try her again.

1.0 out of 5 stars What am I missing?, December 24, 2009
This review is from: Believe (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked this book up at the store and thought it would be a good book. I love medieval, time travel and obviously romance. Didn't look to see if this was a re-release, but that wouldn't have mattered. I can't believe some of the five star reviews. I really tried to get through this book but finally gave up. For an ass't professor, our female character was a little off the wall and her language , as others stated, was very immature. This book had potential, but I guess I disliked the main female character too much to finish the book. It was $[...] thrown out the window, but I learned to look closer to publication dates and story lines.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wow, not what I expected..., December 15, 2009

This review is from: Believe (Mass Market Paperback)
I was a little hesitant to pick up this book because there was very little description on the back of the book...now I know why. Time traveling to the Middle Ages?!? And falling in love with Galahad?? Really? I don't know...that seemed a little far-fetched for me. I will concede that the writing was well done, but if I had known that the storyline was going to be like this, I probably would not have bought it. As it is, I will be re-selling it as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sir Hunk and the Holy Grail, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Believe (Mass Market Paperback)
English professor Tessa St. James is sick of Camelot and the so-called myths that she assumes is hooey bunk. When some claiming that he is Merlin Wizard Extraordinaire and Counselor to Kings meets her, she scorns him as another fake, Taken aback by the professor's disdain and not one to accept disrespect from royals, Merlin decides to teach the show me skeptic a lesson in respect and humility.

He takes Tessa back to the English Dark Ages of Camelot. She is stunned, but though she begins to believe what she sees, Tessa has doubts. He orders Sir Galahad to take her along on his quest to bring back the Holy Grail. However, "Sir Hunk" respectfully says no as a woman does not belong on such a dangerous mission. However King Arthur and Merlin tell him Tessa will accompany him. As they follow a poorly designed map and struggle to interpret a riddle, she proves his equal in battle with dragons, witches and other foes, oh! My!

This is an amusing refreshing romantic twist to the legend of Sir Hunk and the Holy Grail that Monty Python would enjoy. The storyline is filled with humor especially tongue in cheek from Merlin and the differences in how a chivalrous knight treats a lady who acts anything like any female he ever met; sex and dragons go together. Fans of Camelot will appreciate this spin as Galahad learns new uses for round tables and the truth about the Holy Grail in this superb romantic fantasy.
