Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 7^-9. These profiles of more than 40 spiritual leaders span the world and history. Of course, all the most famous are represented: Moses, the Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, as are slightly lesser lights, among them Joan of Arc, Martin Luther, Mary Baker Eddy, and Confucius. There are also people not well known to the general public, including Hildegard of Bingen, a Middle Ages theologian; Isaac Luria, a Jewish mystic; and Rabi'ah of Basra, a leader of Islam's Sufi movement. Modern spiritual leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Desmond Tutu are also included. The oversize format has plenty of white space, and each two-or three-page spread features one or two pictures and a sidebar that neatly sums up each person's dates and accomplishments. Unlike many books about religion, this is very accessible and fact oriented, yet thought provoking. A fine addition to the 200 shelves. Ilene Cooper

Review

"The two-to-five page essays are arranged chronologically and span from the time of Moses to living leaders such as Tenzin Gyatso (the Dalai Lama) and Desmond Tutu.... The indexes by faith and place of birth add to the usefulness of this resource, as do the further readings listed with each article and a more extensive final bibliography."--School Library Journal

"More than 40 spiritual leaders of the world, the shining lights and the less-well known, are profiled in this fact-oriented yet accessible book."--Booklist

"Profiles 43 religious and spiritual leaders... Well-researched and interesting to read, the two-to-five page essays are arranged in chronological order with a fact box highlighting key events in each person's life."--Cobblestone

I enjoyed the articles, which flow with natural dialogue rather than feeling like an encyclopedic snip-of boring information. Oxford Profiles reads like a magazine with a series of articles. It is not necessary to begin on page one and read it throughout unless that's your preference.
