5.0 out of 5 stars Believing in Faeries - a text book for adults

This is an excellent guide to how to access the Hidden Kingdom of faerie. Marcia has presented us with an intriguing and fascinating series of ways in which we humans can once more get in touch with the other world which exists alongside our own.

To achieve this contact, Marcia has given details of seven doorways through which we can pass, if we are willing to use them. However, forget the Victorian picture of tiny, slim females in gossamer dresses, hovering on dragonfly wings - this is a book about the real fairies who look after plants and trees and who can be destroyed by unthinking humans.

The holistic picture of the overlapping worlds and how they fit into a single whole, easily appreciated by children but not always recognised by adults, will immediately ring bells for any student of Wordworthian Romanticism. For the less academically minded, we have a sensible, adult-minded approach to what is often dismissed as a subject suitable only for the junior section of the library.

Thanks, Marcia! This book needed to be written, and it is an excellent addition to the bookshelves of anyone who takes an intelligent interest in the Hidden Realm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Findinf Faeries, March 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Believing in Fairies: A Manual for Grown Ups (Paperback)
Each chapter of this book took me further into the land of faeries and out of my own structured view of life. By the end, I was anxious to go out on my own hunt for the faerie kingdom. A special rose garden that I always stop and admire has become all the more exciting to me. I talk to them and many times, the roses have nodded their heads to me even though there wasn't a wisp of a breeze. I could actually feel the energy in the air and I know that one day soon, I shall see a flicker of light.

There is a whole new appreciation for all things in nature after reading this book. Thank you Marcia, for putting together such a delightful, easy to read, and eye opening book. I look forward to having grandchildren so I can read it to them and then they can show me the faeries that they see! A great book for those who have lost the magic in their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A profound and moving book -- fun, too!, October 1, 2000
By
This review is from: Believing in Fairies: A Manual for Grown Ups (Paperback)
Loved this book, plain and simple. It touched my heart, made me laugh, deepened my sense of wonder. If you've ever thought that flower garden or forest contained something so much "more," this book will definitely make you a true believer. And it really doesn't matter if you take the book literally or as a metaphor. It's lovely, inspiring message is what matters in the end. I'm going to buy copies for everyone I care about who loves nature and the earth!

5.0 out of 5 stars pure delight, June 10, 2001

oh! this is the most FABulous book. it's not much like other faery books reallie. first of all, it's written by someone from Brooklyn, and she has a very different perspective on things. Definitely a part of Faery that needs attention. anyway, this book is mostly about joy. and how faeries can help you find your joy. if you lost it. or if you set it down, and it wandered off. it's been known to do that... it shows you how to love things and accept things, and it explains three of the most important rules in the universe. i don't know how you couldn't love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enter the world of nature spirits..., October 30, 2004
This review is from: Believing in Fairies: A Manual for Grown Ups (Paperback)
This book is amazing. It is simple and gives practical exercises on how to contact faeries. The feeling that i have after performing these exercises is similar to the feeling I have after meditation but these are a lot easier to do so anyone could do them without any training. A great way to relax and have a spiritual experiance. Also, since following her advice, I am closer to nature than ever. Even if you live in a big city, this book will bring you closer to nature. The pictures are great too because they go against oue societal stereotype of faeries being these "beautiful" womanly creatures with wings and show faeries of various shapes and sizes and looks. The faeries look real-life-like. A good investment of your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars What this book had and what it didn't have, July 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Believing in Fairies: A Manual for Grown Ups (Paperback)
This book is actually very well written and it had a lot of interesting meditative like things in it. If your looking for a bit of light reading in regards to fairies
this book contains all you could ever want of light reading. It is a very easy read.
This was what it had and I have it four stars for that. What it didn't have which I
felt could have made it an even better book was more information about the different types of fairies, myths, and legends in the world. I wish it would have had a little
more to it is all. The author is a really good writer and this book reads very easily. It is a great little book for a summer day in a summer dress and sandals by the lake orin a shady park. So I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it.

First, let me say that I am a true believer in fairies. I have never seen one. But I have faith. I also believe that these beings are probably of another dimension that sometimes overlaps with ours and that some people DO see them. I believe in them because nearly every culture on earth has stories about nature spirits or fairies--there must be at least a grain of truth about their existence.

Marcia Zina Mager leads us to believe that she had one or more encounters with fairies and proceeds to tells us how we too can see them ourselves. The thing is that as I was reading the book my mind kept wandering all over the place--I was bored. She was not giving the kind of specific instruction that one would expect from someone who has actually conversed with the creatures.

I reread the beginning of the book and though she hints at seeing fairies she never does come out and say she did. If I were to see a fairy I'd write a book about every detail of what it looked like, what it said to me, and how I managed to encounter it. The author is completely vague about the whole subject.

The best thing about the book are the black and white illustrations by Tom Cross but that is not enough to justify buying it. If you still feel you must have this book then buy it used. It is way too expensive for what you get.
