3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best dual band solution out there.... March 29, 2012
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
An IT person by trait my goal is to always seek out performance. The N900 promised just that...what I got was not what I expected.

Pros:
Dual Band - Separate 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks.
Guest Network
2 USB Ports to attach storage, etc.
QOS - Quality of Service features built in for multimedia streaming.

Cons:
Range/Speed are not up to spec of 802.11n (2.4ghz range was OK).
Software needs major fixing - every change requires a 90second reboot.

I have been a long time user of Apple's Airport Extreme which is in the same price range and offers dual band connectivity. I did my usual speed testing and my results were as expected; however my range was reduced in the 5ghz band and the 2.4ghz band got progressively worst as I moved farther away (naturally).

I use MAC's at home and ran some tests with iStumbler (wireless test utility. I also checked my transmit rates on the MAC and compared them to my Airport Extreme. (Images have been uploaded). You will notice in one image that a router that is clear on the other side of my home was providing me a similar signal to the N900 which was about 6 feet away from me when testing. Naturally I tried multiple laptops/ipad/ipod to see if this was a hardware issue with my machines or the router itself...in all cases the range was not as good as I had hoped.

Here is what I found:
The range in 2.4ghz was OK/Good. The range in 5ghz was lower than what I have gotten with other dual band routers. The transmit speed in the 2.4ghz band was normal but the rate in the 5ghz band was half of what we should be seeing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where to start? March 28, 2012
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have had numerous routers over the last 3 months. My old Netgear router started acting up just a bit, so I replaced it with a Belkin N750. The first I got arrived with a fixed yellow light, so I returned it for a replacement. That started dropping me at random, and I found it a royal pain to printshare. (though I admittedly did not flash the newest firmware - which was a mistake. After that, I was invited into Google's Screenwise Panel, which required using a Linksys E4300. That was nice, but I hated their program so I returned it. Next was the ASUS Black Diamond router, which I found just wonderful, yet a little messy on the software side. So last month, I was offered the Belkin N900 and that is what I am on, now.

The N900 is essentially a clone of the N750, with a bit more speed and one extra wireless channel. It looks exactly the same and performs the same, unless you are transferring large files wirelessly - you will notice a bit increased speed. I have actually been fine with the N900, no more odd "request access to printer from computer" popups when I try to print.

The test with this puppy is to see if it starts acting erratically, like the N750 did.

Is it worth the price? In my experience, speed is worth the price only if it impacts a great deal of your day. I spend a lot of time on the computer, transferring files, wireless printing of LARGE photos, and using the Belkin as a DLNA server to my PS3. So, the extra little speed is nice. Is it worth another 100 bucks over its little brother? Well, if you have money to burn and haven't flinched at the price then your answer is yes.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
One of my biggest product disappointments this year was the Linksys E4200v2. You can read my scathing review over there but basically the router has dual-band connection issues, an awful/incomplete web-based UI and mediocre USB support. All areas in which this Belkin excels.

This router did exactly what I expect any $200 router to do: Be up and running at peak performance in a matter of minutes. I was able to use the web-based UI to set up the router and never had to mess with the CD to get both the 2.4 and 5 GHZ networks up and running, plus a guest network. The range was great and the speeds top-notch. The USB sharing also worked really well with a 3TB Seagate. All excellent. The web based UI is pretty powerful and logical, and makes a lot more sense than the Linksys one I've been using for ages.

Moreover, Belkin put a lot of thought into this router beginning from the packaging and extending through the installation and into everyday use. It comes excellently packaged and each part is clearly, and boldly labeled with a number. The number's tell you what order that cord/part should be assembled in. So the CD is labeled 1, the power cord two and the Ethernet cable three. All with clear instructions. It's virtually fool proof. I tried out the CD for review purposes and it worked well, but as a power-user I'll always prefer the browser-based setup.

This Belkin unit is well worth your time and money. But perhaps the best praise I can give this router is: This is the router I would give my dad. To set up. On his own.
