Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Most homes now are watching contents on their widescreen TVs. Our setup is an Xbox, a Wii, and a small PC. We got rid of our DVD player since Xbox also play DVDs. Usually, I don't have any problem watching videos using my wireless N connection. But there were times when watching Netflix movies in HD and HD videos on YouTube give me the rotating disc similar to the beachball you see in Macs. When that happens, Netflix will automatically switch to a lower resolution. After a few minutes, it will pause again and switch to HD again. This happens a few times during the course of watching a movie. Annoying isn't it? Powerline is a great solution for this kind of problem. It is not as clean as a direct Cat5 connection, but it is more robust and steady than wireless signals. Great solution - if it works!

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE NEW VIDEOLINK 3 :

In the box are two modules, one to be plugged on your router and the other one where you want the internet signal to be. Two cables are included. They can include 4, one for the router module and three for the receiver module. The receiver module has three outputs which is good so I can connect my PC, my Xbox and another device like a Bluray, etc. But 2 cables are good enough than nothing. Powerline modules are usually easy as just plug and play, but when I connected them per instruction. Nothing!

MY EXPERIENCES WITH THE TWO CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS :

They have an online chat customer rep which is great. Just go to the Belkin site and navigate to Contact Us. It didn't take long till I chatted with someone. I asked Mr. Prankar if using a surge suppressor will be a problem with the device. He said it will be no problem. But when I received the device and read the manual, it says it strongly discourage connecting it to a UPS or surge suppressor because of the conditioning effect.

Next time I chatted with Jeshir, he or she guided me step by step, tried resets, encryption button, etc, until everything we tried didn't work. He asked me if both modules are in the same room. I said yes, they are on opposite sides of the living room. After more than 45 minutes, I asked whether both modules need to be plugged on the same circuit breaker. I was told it needs to be on the same breaker. I learned later that this is false. It will still work as long as the outlets are on the same phase).

I then investigated on my own. I tried it on another power outlet in the same floor. It worked flawlessly. Then I went upstairs on the third floor (the router is on the second floor). It worked again and I got 26.5 Mbps on my laptop (compared to directly connecting the laptop at the back of the router - 30 Mbps).

CONCLUSION:

After doing more research, I found out the following:

Somehow, for some reasons, Powerline technology will work perfectly in one outlet and not on another outlet.

If it is the same circuit where you have microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, or something that sucks a lot of power, the performance is greatly affected.

If it is not on the same breaker, it will still work (as it proved to be when I connected it upstairs), just as long as you make sure it is on the same phase.

TIP:

If your outlets are on the same breaker, you know for sure they are on the same phase. If your outlets are not on the same breaker, they may or may not be on the same phase. The only way to know is to trace each outlet back to the panelboard.

------

One last thing, the good thing about the Videolink 3 is that it has 3 outputs at the receiver module. That saves you from buying another device (an Ethernet switch) if you want to connect it to multiple devices.

Also, although the name is Videolink, it doesn't mean it is for watching videos only. It is for any place you need an internet signal whether it is for surfing on your laptop or game consoles, etc.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Belkin model F5D4081 Powerline adapter is part of the HomePlug AV standards which offers a maximum Ethernet link speeds of 200Mbps using the existing home electrical wiring eliminating the need for running dedicated CAT5 cabling.

If you are planning on integrating these adapters to your existing powerline adapters please see this compatibility chart and some information below:

There are two standards for powerline: HomePlug 1.0, which has a maximum link speed of 85Mbps and HomePlug AV, which has a maximum link speed of 200Mbps.

You can use the two standards within the same building, but they are *not compatible* with each other.

HomePlug 1.0 - F5D4050, F5D4070. Powerline Turbo (F5D4071, F5D4073)
HomePlug AV - Powerline AV (F5D4072 + F5D4074 + F5D4077 + F5D4081). Powerline AV+ (F5D4075) and Powerline HD (F5D4076 + F5D4078)

As of date, F5D4081 reviewed here does not have any new firmware updates, but Belkin may release future firmware updates to resolve issues seen in their older models like stability with longer distance etc;
Having said, the model reviewed here on Amazon works as advertised and got stable links up-to 100Mbps in an average single family home.

There are some important points to note:

1.These powerline adapters *DO NOT* work well when you attempt to plug them into a power strip, or surge protectors. They work only when plugged directly into the wall which means you will have to dedicate a power outlet on each side only for this - This seems to be the biggest drawback of these adapters

2.These powerline adapters do get warm to too hot for prolonged usage.

Some strange behaviors was noted in my tests, I have couple of touch lamps in my living room that acted weird, they started to turn on and stepped thru its three stages of brightness , Usually if you touch these table side lamps it cycles thru' ON-DIM-BRIGHT-OFF but something is causing interference when used in conjunction with these Belkin's HomePlug AV adapters! - Go Figure!

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Belkin's Powerline Internet Adapter turns your home's electrical wiring into a high-speed network. Connect one adapter into your broadband router and the other into any outlet in your home to create a network. With 3 ports on the receiving end you can connect multiple devices such as internet-ready TV's, Blu-ray players, and video game consoles. And that seems to be the best way to use this device. Security seems sufficient in a home since it's a hard connection instead of wireless, but I might have concerns in an apartment or condo setting. I also found speeds and reliability weren't always as good as my D-Link DIR-825 wireless router when connecting a laptop around the house. Otherwise it's very easy to setup and use.
