5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great Unpowered w/ Laptop

3.0 out of 5 stars Works but does not charge iPhone (3GS)
My Gateway laptop has four USB ports with one used for a bluetooth dongle and one that stopped working for some reason, leaving me with only two available ports.

I have a cable-type USB adapter that adds five ports (similar to the squid-like electrical cords and works fine if the laptop is not mobile.

Having been burned before w/ another unpowered USB 2.0 hub drawing too much power from my MacBook Pro's USB port (and therefore being useless), I was hesitant ordering this hub. However, having had nothing but good luck w/ Belkin products in the past, I went ahead and ordered it.

It came today, and it works great unpowered - at least w/ the two USB devices I needed to use with it. I used it with a wireless mouse and an external numeric keypad, and they both worked great - no AC power to the hub needed. I also tried it w/ a wired mouse & the numeric keypad - again, success. Finally, I connected a third device, an HP photo printer. It, of course, has it's own power supply, and it worked great with the other two non-powered devices. So, I am very happy with this little gem of a hub.

Finally, it does come w/ an AC transformer in case you need to give it power. But, the good news is, at least w/ 2 non-powered USB devices, it is not required.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product, August 24, 2006

This hub works fine, doesn't take up a lot of space and can be used with or without the included power adaptor. It comes with an extension cord about 3 inches long so it won't interfere with other ports on your computer. (very useful for a laptop).

5.0 out of 5 stars Flexible, functional, perfect, June 18, 2008

I've had this item for a year. I've used it with a laptop and a desktop. I've used it with and without the included power cord. I love the flexibility of using power or unpowered, with or without the included USB extension cord (so it doesn't stick straight out of your computer to be side-swiped by someone/something).

This helps me turn my computers into full retail Point-Of-Sale systems, with credit card & barcode readers, receipt & invoice printers, and cash drawers - all connected through USB :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Used this with my desktop, May 30, 2008

Couldn't simply plug the hub straight into one of my desktop's USB ports to use it that way as the keyboard would function off of it but my mouse would not. However, it comes with an optional power adapter which helps it function perfectly. Its compact, unobtrusive size combined with the ability to use four additional peripherals makes it A-1 in my book. Would definitely buy another one, if needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works but does not charge iPhone (3GS), September 13, 2011

This review is from: USB 2.0 Thumb Hub (Personal Computers)
My Gateway laptop has four USB ports with one used for a bluetooth dongle and one that stopped working for some reason, leaving me with only two available ports.

I have a cable-type USB adapter that adds five ports (similar to the squid-like electrical cords and works fine if the laptop is not mobile.

I was searching for a USB adapter that would provide additional ports but did not have any length of cable. This Belkin adapter was exactly what I was looking for and and could also use on my ACER netbook. The drivers installed easily and I was using the adapter in a short time. To keep this device from blocking the other ports I use a swivel adapter which allow me to have the ports face the rear of the laptop.

The one downfall for me, and a big one, is that the Belkin Thumb Hub will not charge my iPhone 3GS no matter what port I tried. An actual message popped up on my iPhone screen stating this.

Since smatphones lose battery power quickly, is is important to me to be able to charge my phone via USB. Without this ability, I chose to return the item.

I did not try any other family cell phone to see if they would charge but if you don't care about charging your phone (iPhone)this four port adapter is worth purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Connected, March 3, 2009

I have 8 USB ports on my desktop, but only 4 are on the back and the rest are recessed behind a sliding door on the front (not good for permanent connections). I'm also using another powered hub that is located further from the computer.

I'm using this hub Unpowered for my keyboard and wireless mouse dongle and it's working great. I needed to use the short extension cable provided so I taped the hub to the side of my computer so it wouldn't be dangling. I'll probably move my Webcam onto the hub also since it's rarely used.

I think the hub is a bit expensive(at $25), and it would be great if they offered it for less without the adapter for those that just want to use it unpowered. If I see it go on sale I'm buying a second one.

This Belkin USB Thumb Hub is very convenient. Most USB hubs have long cords to bother with but this is plug & play directly into the USB port of your computer. I have a notebook and this makes it much easier to use Bluetooth, wireless mouse, etc. Most notebooks don't have enough USB ports and this resolves it.

Excellent for a laptop. Compact enough not to interfere with other cables. I bought 2, one for my HP Pavilion and the other for my old Dell Latitude.

This device is rather bulky for laptop use, but it fits securely and is portable. I haven't used the power cord yet. The hub's narrow neck lets me insert my mouse's nano USB into an adjacent port. Otherwise, the hub gets in the way of standard USB dongles and flash drives so beware if you need to use an adjacent port.

If you want tree USB more in your computer and you need mobility this product is for you.

Is very portable and easy to use.

If your device need power over the USB (Such as portable HD) it has a power supply that you can connect to an outlet (Included in the package but optional to use)
