Great adapter out of the box,

This review is from: Belkin ME1001-USB Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g (Personal Computers)
My steps to success:
- Cut out of plastic. - Run driver from included CD on my Windows XP desktop. - Plug adapter into USB hub. That was it. Worked right away. My router's two floors down and the signal strength's excellent. Gotta love it.

Worked right away, just followed the instructions. We are using it on a desktop computer with Windows ME and Linksys Wifi 802.11g. Only have had it for a few days, but so far it works great.
I only gave it 4 stars, due to the fact that it was too fat to plug directly into the usb port on the computer. Fortunately for me I have a monitor with more usb ports on it that I was able to utilize.

After reading all the reviews on usb wireless adapters I found this one very affordable and reliable. I bought it about a month ago and no regrets so far. It's been used very frequently by bringing my old desktop (running on XP) online and didn't annoyingly fail. Sometimes we have seen the signal gets lost and come back for no reason and booted the system once or twice over the course of the use. I couldn't switch to Windows Wireless Utility which I think is a lot better (at least would keep it connected) but didn't spend much time trying yet. Overall, I'm satisfied with the product and recommend, but not highly.

Wow, I must have purchased the last of this line 'cause when I went looking for it to do this review it was no longer in the search. Guess my opinion isn't going to count for much, but as long as I'm here...
I didn't have the same good luck that Greg had. When I ran the installation and was prompted to plug in the device, nothing happened. Research on the support site was limited to: "Try another USB port." Okey dokey, but the physical dimensions of this device made that impossible for me. Next step, go to Wal-Mart and buy a "flexible USB adapter" for $6.97. WooHoo! Plugged in, got a "new hardware detected" message, but still no reaction from the installed software. Back to square one. I uninstalled the software, then re-installed. Whole different ball game this time. Right off the bat when prompted to plug in device, I got results. Entered the WEP code for my network and now I'm up and running. Basically I'm a happy camper, but I withheld that 5th star because the device is a bit bulky and will only fit a wide open USB port.

Took a chance finding something that would work with my Ubuntu Linux installation.
Took this unit out of the box, plugged it into my USB port and - BINGO!! I had a nice, strong wireless connection! I didn't have to do a thing!! Continues to function well - no complaints at all! Highly recommended,

I bought this adapter because I thought that our desktop computer wouldn't be in the same room as the router in our new apartment. The adapter itself is somewhat larger than I thought it would be, but the size may just be necessary to pick up a better signal.
The adapter worked fine in both XP and Linux. I was happy to find that it supported WPA2 with no fuss under Ubuntu Linux.

Given the low price, I was surprised that it was easy to install and even worked fine on Vista (although I had to call the free support number because on Vista, the included software program to find and connect to the router doesn't work - you just have to go to the Windows Start Button and do it through "Connect To"). Although the manufacturer doesn't state that it's made for Vista, it seems to work fine for me.

I've got a toshiba laptop where my internal wifi card failed. I'd gotten a netgear usb card that i'd been using.
I'm using the Belkin now. I primarily use Linux. Ubuntu picked up the card right away. While the Netgear usb card regularly lost the connection, the Belkin is awesome! It's stable. It's *fast*. It works flawlessly in Ubuntu. Did I mention that it's fast? Pages load in a fraction of the time the Netgear loaded them. So far, it's been the best $27 I"ve spent in a while.

Worked OK but not sturdy enough for longterm,
This review is from: Belkin ME1001-USB Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g (Personal Computers)
This installed easily and had a program that by-passed the normal Windows wireless stuff. It worked for a while but was so cheaply made that now just someone walking in the room is enough to make it disconnect. Basically it's junk.

I've had this adapter for several years now and I've been very happy with it. I've used it in an old IBM thinkpad laptop to add wireless capability to it. I've also used it with my wife's computer in our living room so we can stream HD videos over the internet, and it exceeded my expectations! We've watched entire episodes of TV shows streaming in HD without any pausing or stuttering, and I've played Massively Multiplayer games over this connection as well without any issues or lag.
As a long time user of this adapter, I give it 5 stars for performance, reliability, cost, and ease of use. |
