I was looking for a compact wireless router for my small (600 sq.ft.) apartment. From out of the box to being on the web took less than 10 minutes. After being guided by a few easy steps from the installation CD, my Powerbook was connected and I was able to get a strong signal even if I went into the other room from where the unit was plugged in.
It is, as another reviewer noted, smaller than it appears in the photo and you have the option of standing it on it's side, which further reduces it's footprint. I would recommend this to anyone with a small apartment or condo who wants wireless connectivity without bells and whistles, and wants a simple design style that blends in with a small space.

Fantastic product!,

The setup for this router could not have been easier. It is laid out in plain language and takes about 3 minutes total. I have a fantastic signal in my entire apartment, really really fast internet for it being wireless, and I have never had a problem with losing the signal.

This router has everything. I am using this as a wireless bridge to extend my wireless coverage to downstairs in my old house which doesn't have wireless friendly walls and floors.
It has WPA/WEP protection. 4 port 10/100 switch. Great web interface. Nice and small. Has MAC filtering. Wireless bridging of course. MAC filtering for wireless bridging. Have this bridged to a D-Link DI-634M. No cons whatsoever that I see!

I purchased this product because of the strong customer reviews and compact size. I did not realize that the easy install software is NOT compatible with Windows Vista so you are supposed to manually install rhe hardware and software. After having to flip through practically the entire user manual, you get to page 78, where it walks you through the manual installation instructions that are still not geared towards Vista. I ran the entire installation process and my computer still couldn't read the wireless router. This router is a completed waste of time and energy if you have Windows Vista. Do not BUY!

Good product,
This review is from: Belkin ME1004-R Wireless Cable/DSL Router (Personal Computers)
The router is a good wireless product for being just a g and not a super g or n. The signal strength extends for a decent distance 40-50 ft but is inconsistent @ times. Make sure not to have other wireless(phones) or electronic devices near the usb adpater.

This router is hard to setup with Vistas although it says it is compatible you have to use a manual process. The manual steps are not easy to understand and then I had to call their customer service three times. On the third call, which each call lasted more than 1 1/2 hours, I was escalated to a senior level technician and was able to set it up. It works well now, but I have to reset it sometimes. I will never purchase another Belkin product and the communications barrier between the customer service agents (in India) is very frustrating.

Easy set up but range goes after about 3 months,

I bought this to replace a linksys router (with two antennae). I was very surprised at how easy this was to setup, much easier than the Linksys! Wireless was incredibly easy. I only had to add in the key that it generated to my laptop and instant connection to the network!
I find that the wireless range is surprisingly good, especially considering it uses only one antenna. The signal is strong enough to go 28' through two cement-filled, concrete/cinder block walls with steel. My laptop registers the signal strength as Very low, but I can surf the net and upload/download files at the same speed that I used to get with my Linksys. UPDATE - downgrade to 2.5 stars. My router suddenly lost its wireless range after about 2 months. I reset the router and it didn't solve the problem. I ended up having to buy a wireless USB adapter with a long USB cable to connect to my laptop, longer cat 5e cables so that the router could be moved to a spot that had an almost direct line of sight with my USB adapter to get wireless access!

Worked for a month! Poor signal.,
This review is from: Belkin ME1004-R Wireless Cable/DSL Router (Personal Computers)
I bought this router based on the glowing reviews. Ignore the great reviews from folks who haven't used it for longer than a month. Yes, yes it was easy to set up, blah, blah. Yes it was cheap but I got what I paid for.
Out of the box, I was skeptical because of it's cheap appearance and feel. This router started cutting out on me (dropping it's wireless signal) after one month of use. Now after three months, the wireless is down more than it's up. Cheap piece of junk! My quest for a quality home/office router continues.

TWO ROUTERS: 1 dead after one minute, 1 dead after 2 weeks. DO NOT BUY!!!,

The router was super easy to setup. I set the WPA encryption, set the channel ID, setup the share name, and restarted the router in only a couple of minutes. Too bad it only worked for 1 minute after that before going into a coma where it did not respond to anything. I even tried doing a hard (paperclip) reset, to no avail. Oh, and it looks and feels like a super-cheap router. It's quite flimsy.
UPDATE: I recently received a replacement router. It WORKED ok, but caused pops and glitches in streaming video and audio (a major problem, IMHO). Moreover, I could only connect to another computer on my network at 1/5 of the advertised 54 mbit/sec rate. So, I wasn't totally thrilled with this router when it decided to stop working altogether. I tried resetting it, to no avail. None of my computers could see the router. THIS ROUTER IS COMPLETE GARBAGE. Two of these routers have died on me in less than a month. Needless to say, I absolutely do not recommend that ANYONE buy this router. In fact, I'm so annoyed with wireless LANs in general that I'm running wires through my house now. |
