4.0 out of 5 stars Nice wall mounted surge protection with a slight vampire load

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice wall mounted surge protection with a slight vampire load, June 23, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was shopping for surge suppressors and came across this Belkin wall mounted unit. I like wall mounted units better because I hate having power strips laying on the floor. This unit has the added bonus of having two USB charging ports on it.

Pros,
- 2 USB charging ports for phones, IPODs, etc.
- wall mounted.
- $25,000 insurance protection.

Cons,
- The USB chargers always draw a small bit of electricity even when not being used. I plugged this surge protector into my Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor and found it drew a small current.
- The $25,000 insurance policy has some small print. Every cable going into your protected device needs to be run through an approved Belkin device. So if you plug in a TV, the coax connector has to be plugged into a Belkin device. Protecting a PC? You need to be using wireless, or you need to have your network cable going through an approved Belkin device. Not a major problem, just make sure you are actually covered by the insurance policy BEFORE a disaster hits.
- The outlets in my house are the square, flat type that do not have a center screw hole to mount this unit. I had to change the outlet to a standard outlet which since I had everything on-hand, and am comfortable with electrical work, took me about 5 minutes.

My overall opinion of this item is that it does its job as advertised. If it fits your needs and the slight vampire power load do not bother you, then it will work out just fine for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charges iPad; charges 2 things at a time!, March 18, 2011

Really surprised to see people here having problems charging an iPad or two things at a time. Not only can I charge my iPad with this, but I can charge my iPhone at the same time! And yes, I'm charging them over the USB power ports. I have an original iPad (not an iPad 2) and an iPhone 3GS.

Overall I'm delighted with this product, and I ended up buying a second one.

Also, there were no arguments about sending the unit back or anything, so it seems like a possibly common issue?

This product was perfect for me. I had been looking for something like this with USB ports integrated. My only wish is that the 120AC plugs swiveled, like some other products. Having the USB ports frees up some of the AC sockets and creates less clutter. Great product!

4.0 out of 5 stars USB does not charge iPad, January 7, 2011

I use the 2 USB chargers to charge my iPhone and iPod nano simultaneously, while using the outlet plugs for a light, clock radio, phone and iPad. The USB chargers will not charge my iPad, even when the second USB is unplugged. They don't seem to have enough power for the iPad. This is not a big issue for me, because I use the 2 USBs for other devices, but it will be for others. You can still plug your iPad power adapter in one of the 6 outlets.

When dealing with the kids growing number of gadgets and things that needed to be plugged in or charged, I started looking for something like this.

I found many different products that would fit the bill, but each was $30 or more. When I saw this Belkin on Amazon at ~$13 I was blown away and figured it must be bad, but the reviewers say different (mostly).

I decided to purchase 3 of these, one for each bedroom, and try it out myself. They were easy to install, just remove the face plate from an open outlet, plug in and screw in. I wasn't actually expecting that type of setup, but I'm very happy with it. Much better than a big power strip laying on the ground.

The 2 USB ports at the top are really convenient and the 6 plugs are spaced enough that most chargers will fit without obstructing the other outlets. Unfortunately there was one plug that was massive enough to cover the adjacent outlet, so I only have use of 5 outlets in one of the kids' rooms, but it is still enough to keep everything plugged in and organized.

I cannot stress enough how great having the USB ports is. There are a few items in the house(tablet, ipod, camera) that charge via USB and it was always a pain to find a wall adapter and plug it in. Now, we can just plug it right into this unit, with the added benefit of having surge protection.

I also purchased 2 of the "mini" versions from Belkin (3 outlets, 2 usb) to move around easily in the house or take when traveling. These work great too, and they were about $10 each on Amazon. All in all, I spent less than $60 on the 3 big units and 2 mini ones, money very well spent.

All I need now is a way to organize all the cords and keep them untangled!

5.0 out of 5 stars DOES charge iPad2!, August 14, 2011
By
This review is from: Belkin 6 Outlet Surge Protector with USB (Electronics)
Not much else to say than other reviews, but it absolutely does charge the iPad2 with a standard charging cable. That's the main reason I bought it, so I could charge my iPad2'in the bedroom without unplugging the clock or nightstand light. This accomplishes that beautifully, without the need for an additional outlet. Just use a standard Apple synch cord and you're good to go. An excellent solution.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fried in less than 60 seconds, October 30, 2011
This review is from: Belkin 6 Outlet Surge Protector with USB (Electronics)
After plugging in my Garmin GPS watch. I plugged in an iphone 4 and got no charge. the lights on the power strip were no longer on. I unplugged and replugged. nothing.
Distinct burn insulation smell was present, no smoke but the unit is surely not working.
USB charging not working.
110 AC standard plugs, not working either.

back to costco it goes.

I got this for the master bedroom, so my wife and I could charge our two phones at night and still have outlets for lights, etc. This actually replaces the outlet's cover plate, and screws into the outlet so it's securely attached to the wall. It looks much better on the wall than a comparable power strip cluttering the floor.
