I am *extremely* careful with my electronic equipment, one of the reasons I bought this cover after careful product review of similar items. When the iPad is not being used (for reading, mainly), it lives in a padded case for additional protection.

I have had this snap shield since the day my iPad2 came out of its box, and even with hyper-careful handling, 3 of 4 corners have cracks. How's they get there? I've never taken the cover off, the device has NEVER been dropped, you can see that there's no damage to the corners from the outside, but still...3/4 of the corners are cracked and splitting wider.

Is this a heat issue? Cold issue? What's the deal, Belkin?

Buy it if you want something only for a few months. Otherwise there are other products out there. Too bad, too, because this exactly fit my needs.

There are two revisions of this product with the same part number. I went through 2 of these covers before I realized this. The only way to tell from inside the package is that the microphone hole on the new revision is a trapezoid shape and on the old it is a straight slot. Once out of the package you will see the new revision has edges that come over the side of the iPad instead of just up to the edge like the old rev. The old rev gets hairline cracks in all the corners and starts to crumble within a month or two. My wife has had the new rev for 4 months and I have now had mine for 2 months and no cracks have appeared. I went through 2 covers before I discovered the difference on my third. The problem is both revs are still out there, like this one I bought from Amazon which was broken within 2 weeks.

I had been using a Targus leather iPad 2 cover for some time when my spouse suggested I try the Belkin Snap Shield and a smart cover. My initial reaction was that I was fairly happy with the cover I had been using, but as over the next few days my Targus started to shed rubber, I decided to give the Belkin a shot. Designed to go with the iPad 2 smart cover, the Belkin backing cover is formed translucent plastic that snaps on easily to the metal side of the iPad. There are notches--not holes--cut out for the headphones, microphone, power button, side switches and charging slot, with two appropriately sized holes for the speakers and the camera. While this means the edges aren't flat all the way around, the increased ease of getting to the manual controls while holding the iPad comfortably more than make up for it, and with the smart cover closed, the point is moot. The plastic is translucent--not transparent--so iPads with special inscriptions won't have those clearly visible, but compared to a transparent back cover, there is far less visibility to any scratches or mars that might occur. In the several weeks I've used it, though, it has yet to scratch or crack at all. The one thing that it does pick up a lot of is grease marks from my fingers. While a quick Windexing (or even a moist washcloth) clears them right up, it's very obvious when a greasy-fingered kid has been playing with your iPad when you're not looking. All in all, I'd recommend this backing for anyone who wants to use the smart-cover without leaving half of their tablet exposed.

I purchased this direct from J&R and received it about 3 weeks ago. As stated, the shield covers only the rear of the iPad 2, and installation was a snap (literally). Once on, it's very slim and unobstructive and offers a very good nonslip feel, making the iPad easier to hold. The fit is excellent. Finish was good, with the exception of a couple grains of grit which I could feel (but not see). In my opinion, this cover adds to the utility and very much to the appearance of the iPad.

However, I recently noticed what appeared to be a hairline crack on the case near one of the corners. After very gently removing the shield, I noticed that there were in fact several hairline cracks, all located at/near three of the corners (and no, I didn't crack it during installation or removal). As the iPad 2/shield had always been handled gently and never dropped, I could see no reason for the appearance of these cracks, except as through defects in manufacturing and/or design. It's disappointing that a simple plastic cover (which was already overpriced for what it is) would develop cracks at critical stress points in such a short amount of time (if ever). If you Google "Belkin Snap Shield iPad 2 cracks" or something similar, you'll find similar complaints.

I left a message for J&R to see if they will refund or replace the item (possibly a temporary fix, but I'm hoping I just got a bad unit).

If not for the corner cracks, I would have no problem giving this product five stars.

EDIT: J&R issued an RMA, but I'm stuck with the return shipping costs [keep ALL your packaging material, if you buy this]. I opted for a refund, as I think it's a design flaw. I will be looking at other rear covers on Amazon, which is unfortunate since I really like this one.

Belkin's Snap Shield for the ipad2 is a perfect fit. It is simple, sleek and doesn't add any more weight to the ipad since I do carry it most places I travel. It compliments the cover so it looks like one piece. The snap shield doesn't cover up any of the buttons, camera, or connectors that I need to access. It also has a non-slip grip so you don't have to really worry about it sliding out of your hands. The price was pretty reasonable and you can find them at Best Buy or Target, I really haven't seen the Belkins snap shield any where else.
