Product Description

Style: With Cable

With the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock, you can quickly transfer and stream media between your laptop and up to eight other devices using just one cable. By connecting your laptop to the dock with the included Thunderbolt cable, you'll have access to Ethernet, FireWire, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.0 ports for high-speed file transfers as well as audio input and output jacks for listening to music. Moving large files is much faster with Thunderbolt technology (when compared with USB 2.0 or FireWire 800 transfer speeds) so you can spend more time enjoying your media and less time waiting. The dock has a sleek design and can be used to connect your laptop to an external display or monitor so you can view your files on a big screen (HDMI adapter sold separately).

Speedy, Reliable Transfers with Thunderbolt Technology
Thunderbolt

The Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock lets you take advantage of Thunderbolt technology to move data on two bidirectional 10 Gbps channels so you can transfer large files without the wait. The dock's three USB 3.0 ports each work 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and its two Thunderbolt ports operate 12 times faster than FireWire 800. This means you can transfer a favorite HD movie in 30 seconds or an entire year's worth of music in 10 minutes and spend more time enjoying your media.

Up to Eight Connections with One Cable

The dock comes with a 3.3-foot Thunderbolt cable that allows you to connect your laptop to eight other devices. The dock includes Ethernet, FireWire, Thunderbolt, and three USB 3.0 ports as well as headphone and audio input jacks. Plug your laptop into all your devices with one cable instead of cluttering your workspace with multiple cables. If you need more ports, the dock allows you to daisy chain up to five Thunderbolt-equipped devices such as hard drives or monitors.

Connect to External Display or Monitor

The Thunderbolt Express Dock is compatible with Mini DisplayPort displays. You can also use a Mini DisplayPort adapter (sold separately) to connect to a DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, or VGA display. This allows you to view your documents, movies, and photos on a larger screen.

Sleek, Low-Profile Design

The dock's sleek design lets it provide the functionality you need without taking up space. It includes a cable management channel so you can route the necessary cable to the front of the dock for connection to your computer. The dock measures 3.2 by 12.5 by 7.4 inches (H x W x D) and weighs 3 pounds.

Compatibility Information

The Thunderbolt Express Dock is meant for use with a MackBook Air, MacBook Pro Mac Mini, or iMac Thunderbolt-enabled computer. It requires Mac OS X v10.8.4 or later.

Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

I would much prefer that the device had at least 3 thunderbolt ports instead of 3 USB 3.0 ports.

Since discovering the problem, i have had 5 calls to belkin's customer service, each more confusing than the last, at which point they offered to send me a new unit.

I don't understand why its USB 3 ports can't charge these devices -- the thing comes with a massive 12V 6A power brick.

I'm the "Tech Daddy" on the Huffington Post, and I really wanted to like this device -- really! I'd been tracking it since it was first announced a little less than 2 years ago. At one time I chalked it up to vaporware, as the release date kept changing. But finally it was here and I couldn't wait to order it.

After all that anticipation, I'm sorry to say the device is is less than stellar, for the following reasons:

1. YOU CANNOT BOOT FROM IT -- nowhere online or in any print materials does Belkin mention this. Even on their own website they don't bring it up! BTW, there is no manual for the device; only an FAQ, and it's pretty paltry. Anyway, I had backed up a client's Mac to their new USB 3 external drive, and I used the Dock to connect that drive as their MacBook Pro doesn't have USB 3 ports. But it DOES have Thunderbolt! Using the Dock, the backup speeds were very impressive, indeed. HOWEVER ... I found that I could not boot from that drive, or any connected device, because they weren't recognized at startup. Bad Belkin!

2. THE ESATA PORT IS GONE -- originally the device as described by Belkin was going to have an eSata port. But when I unboxed the product, there was none to be found. I since learned that Belkin revised the device TWICE since its original announcement, and decided to drop the eSata port. That was one of the main reasons I wanted it: to use the eSata ports on my external drives. I did manage a workaround, though: I got a $30 eSata to USB3 cable and did it that way.

3. USB3 SPEED IS LIMITED TO 2.5GB/S -- the promise of unleashing full 5GB/S USB3 speed will have to wait for another day. For whatever reason, Belkin very quietly, and in small print, says 2.5GB/S is the maximum using the Dock. Really?

4. YOU MUST USE OS X 10.8.

Wanted to find a solution that would let me to disconnect just one wire from my MacBook Pro (Spring '11). Got it yesterday. Returned today for the following reasons:

1. I'm using hardwire connection, but the ethernet jack has some issues: after working for a couple of hours it'd lose connection. Belkin's tech support suggested to unplug the power for 10 sec. I did, and it helped for a couple of more hours... Not sure if it was a problem of this particular unit.

2. I'm using an external mike that's connected to my MacBook with optical cable via the Line In input. But this dock doesn't have replication of the Line In input - the have a jack for the mike, but it's not the same. So I was not able to hook up my high quality mike to the dock.

3. When I plugged my iPhone charger to the USB on the dock the iTunes didn't see my iPhone. So synchronization from iTunes didn't work.

I guess, this device may have some use for other people, but not for me. On the positive note I have to say that returning of this unit was pretty easy - they emailed me a prepaid UPS shipping slip.

This dock station doesn't handle the hot plugin correctly. Each time I connect it to MacBook Retina laptop with the thunderbolt cable, it simply messes up my monitor settings, and I need to restart my MacBook Retina laptop to recover from it. So stay away from this dock station.

I bought this hub because i have a 2011 Macbook pro with thunderbolt but not USB3. I intended to use it to back up files from memory cards onto multiple usb3 hard drives, since they have become standard and thunderbolt hard drives are very expensive. I saw this as a $300 option to keep me from having to purchase a new 2013 macbook pro retina that has 2 usb3 ports. However, not only does it not do what it is supposed to do, the customer service is so unbelievably awful that i dont think ill every buy anything from belkin again. When i have the dock connected, only one of the 3 usb3 ports will function at once. If i have one hard drive connected it mounts, but then when i connect a card reader or 2nd hard drive, it immediately ejects the first drive and then neither one will mount. I have tried 6+ hard drives and multiple card readers in different configurations and it has failed every test. This is one expensive piece of junk. Since discovering the problem, i have had 5 calls to belkin's customer service, each more confusing than the last, at which point they offered to send me a new unit. 2 weeks later said unit has not arrived, i have no tracking number, the server is down so they cant locate it to me, and i want to throw my hub into the toilet. Please do yourself a favor and do not buy this product!!!!

I really wanted to like this dock. We ordered it to test before giving them to our users (I'm on an IT team that supports ~40 Mac users), and I'm glad we didn't give it to any of them. On the surface, it works well: USB, Ethernet and the headphone jack worked without any messing with, and Thunderbolt passthrough (for a monitor) didn't have any issues. However, I started to notice an issue: when I would put my laptop (a 2012 MBP Retina 15") to sleep and disconnect it, I couldn't bring it back from sleep because the screen would be blacked out, and I'd have to hard power it to get things fixed.

That was super obnoxious, but last night I finally gave up on it: I put my machine to sleep and undocked as usual, then put it in my bag. An hour later I opened my bag to find that... my laptop had been running the whole time, and was blazing hot. Hot enough that I'm worried about the battery, honestly. That's about enough of that.

I'm sure you're asking, what did support say? I'd love to know that as well. No combination of phone call, email or webpage form has gotten me any response from them, except one that directed me to try a number I had already called. The website strongly implies that they only support the dock if you pay for their premium support. Maybe I'm wrong and there's some awesome support somewhere, but I can't find it, and they're super unresponsive. Frankly I'd just return the thing at this point, but I spent too long trying to get it working and seeing if support would get back to me, so now I'm stuck with it.

It's likely that a Mac Mini user (of which we have a few here) would be fine with it, and I'll give that a shot, but all I can say for now is don't do it.
