I've had similar experiences with external Bluetooth speakers, and the sound of the Thunderstorm stands with the best of those.

Because there are currently two versions of the Thunderstorm Home Theater available now, I want to be clear that I am reviewing the one designed to be compatible with the 4th generation iPad. It became available as of April 2013 - as compared with the previous model which was available earlier in the year.

I am very satisfied with this system.

Here's my experience so far.

Set- up:

I found this to be very simple. I used the charger to get the battery up to speed and it charged very quickly. Installing the iPad into the speaker enclosure was basically intuitive: I simply opened a connector drawer, slid my iPad under a side rim, and closed the drawer. Done.

Configuring and using the Thunderstorm:

At this point, there are two options: either use an Audio Setting button to toggle the sound mode or download the Thunder app to select an optimized audio setting. I decided to test the toggle option first before I downloaded the app. I was impressed with the sound quality. I thought the sound was fine with the toggle option but the app did produce a better sound. It took 2 tries to get it to download properly (this was probably due to a significant drop in my Wifi speed, unrelated to the app itself, while I was downloading the first time).

Battery time: While product literature notes that the battery lasts for up to 10 hours before needing to be recharged , I haven't yet tested it for the full 10 hours of use before recharging - but will update when I do. I was able to watch 3 movies, each lasting approximately 2 hours, without recharging the battery and there was definitely life left in the battery after my viewing sessions.

Sound quality:

I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much. I was skeptical.

I am very happy with this speaker case. We watch Netflix and Amazon Prime movies often on the iPad and the volume was always an issue, but not anymore. Belkin Thunderstorm delivers! I actually had to ask my son to turn down the iPad volume last night cuz it was way too loud.

I was truly amazed at the performance of this speaker case. I have really enjoyed using it when watching movie trailers and streaming videos. It is plenty loud for you to watch a movie in bed or in the couch and will fill out the room easily. The bass response is actually quite good and proves that the design works. I have traveled with it and it comes in handy when watching a movie or show at the hotel...actually better sound from this handheld speaker case than the crappy tv speakers at most hotels but then again the proximity has something to do with it. You do get added bulk but it's worth the performance. It's comfortable to the touch and not heavy which is great if just holding, but recommend you use the stand function as sounds better with some space between you and the system. A great product that is worth every penny.

I have been involved in sales training and motivation for over three decades. I used to consider a magic erase board to be high-tech. Once laptops became popular and affordable it really changed the way that trainers could present useful educational material to those that they are wanting to teach and inspire.

For some reason tablets (like the iPad) have become a more popular and useful sales training tool than the laptop. I can place it on a desk and salespeople will be naturally drawn to it. iPads can be great for showing video clips to small groups, 2-6 people, but the sound is somewhat underwhelming. The Belkin Thunderstorm is so good that I find myself using it to listen to music instead of using my headphones or ear-buds.

Movies, audio clips and even YouTube videos are more enjoyable when I use my Thunderstorm. I can't believe how good the sound is, especially considering it's small size. I think that I have accidentally sold a dozen of those to people that have seen it used in action. It has a few eccentricities but I really enjoy using this product and I am glad that I own it.

Pros:

Outstanding sound. Sounds best when held about a foot in front of your face at which point the stereo is completely immersive and the picture is effectively theater sized. It really does sound impressive.

Sturdy and rigid. Easy to insert and remove the iPad, there is a latch that slides out pulling the dock connector out of the iPad which normally holds it in place. The other end of the iPad is held by a small lip that runs the width of the iPad. The case is all rigid enough that this system hold it pretty well.

You can charge the complete system with the included charger without removing the iPad from the case.

There's one control basically which lets you set the "width" of the stereo effect, and this can be controlled either with a free App or with a button on the case which cycles through the modes (movie, music, game, etc.) and has a voice announcement of the selected mode.

Cons:

It's bulky and heavy. It's thicker than you might expect due to the bose-like bass plumbing and the battery. After a couple days I stopped leaving the iPad in it unless I actually wanted the speakers.

The built in smart-cover seems somewhat flimsy relative to the massive weight of the rest of the system. It connects to the side of the case through a combination of a slot and magnets. It does not match as reliably to the iPad as the standard Apple smart-cover and whether the iPad detects the "closed" magnet seems potentially unreliable.

The included charger uses a round plug into the case and has a medium size wall-wart power supply, so it's one more thing to carry along.

It's kinda pricey.

Also the documentation is sparse to the point of being practically nonexistent.
