(This is a review of the Travel version of the hub.)

Features

The number one feature for this hub is that it is small, rugged enough to be kept in a laptop bag, and it stores tidy (its cable wraps around the outside and docks in one of the hub's USB ports).

The hub is non-powered, which means that some bus-powered hard drives (typically spinning drives) may not draw enough power from the hub for you to use them.

It worked fine in my testing for flash drives and SD card readers.

Design

While the design of this hub is suitable for travel, it causes me some grief due to the way the cord is designed. The male end of the USB plug is at a right angle to the USB cord, which means that it will block the USB port to the left of the one you're using. This is extremely frustrating on my MacBook, which as 2 USB ports side-by-side. It limits which port I can use, which can be very important.

The ports on the hub are recessed, and the one that the USB cord plugs into (when you're not using the hub) is recessed more than the others. I find that some of my devices cannot fit into that port. (That port is wide enough for a majority of flash drives and any USB cord, but larger devices are too wide to fit.)

Should I get a USB 3.0 Hub Instead?

If you need one for USB 3.0 devices, yes, but this hub is very inexpensive and will work fine on all the USB 2.0 devices in your life.

The hub works fine technically. But the design is problematic. The hub's cord is off to the side of the plug that connects to the computer (vs. straight out from the back of the connector) so it gets in the way of other ports, like the power port and the area where I plug in my laptop lock on my MacBook Pro. I'm returning this and getting a hub where the cord comes out of the back end of the connector so I can actually use other ports at the same time.

Now days you can never have enough USB outlets. Enter Belkin's 4-port travel USB hub. The splitter concept is as old as the USB, but the execution here is worth noticing. The grooved design allows you to "roll" up the cord when not in use, kinda like you would the cord of a vacuum cleaner. It makes for a tight, compact, wire-free storage that will fit anywhere. The ports are USB 2.0 and not especially fast when it comes to transferring large amounts of data, but nothing to be frustrated by.

Other than that, it does what it's supposed to do - turn one USB into four. I give it a high recommendation because the current price ($4.99) is great and the clean design concept makes it very frustration-free during travel or wherever you may need to split your USB connections.

I have to say that I'm a little biased against this hub, simply because it has an AC adapter (with inconvenient arrangement, as previously stated), is relatively expensive for a 4-port USB 2.0 hub, and Belkin already has another one that does not have those disadvantages.

Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra-Mini Hub

Now, compare that with this one, and see which is better for your needs.

I love the idea of being able to plug all my devices in at one time to charge without using up all the ports on the computer itself. I had my kindle, phone and printer all plugged in at the same time with no problems using any of them, or no problems with charging. It's small enough to tuck into my computer bag, and the outer shell seems fairly durable and able to withstand a lot of use. Would recommend this for anyone, especially those who travel or work on their computers away from home alot. Will be taking this with me to a conference next month to keep things charged up during sessions!

[This review is for the travel-style hub.]

I have to hand it to Belkin, this is the smallest and most compact 4-port USB hub that I've seen. With the cable winding around the circular device, and the plug being stored in one of the ports, it's only about 2.3" in diameter and 0.6" thick. The plastic case makes it very lightweight (barely one ounce), although it may not be as durable as a metal-cased hub would be.

This is a USB 2.0 device. I tested it with some file transfers to a USB 2.0 flash drive, and results were very similar to other USB 2.0 hubs that I've used. It also worked well with my all-in-one card reader. The hub would be fine for regular home or office use, but the small size also makes it ideal for traveling.

Note that one of the ports (the one that the USB plug stores in) is recessed and is not very wide. My Kingston 32GB DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G3 flash drive was too big to fit into this port, although it fit the other three ports okay. If this may be an issue with your hardware, consider another Belkin compact 4-port hub, the Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra-Mini Hub where all four ports should be usable for any device.

The compactness and portability of the hub make it very handy for traveling, and the low price makes it a nice little accessory for any PC.
