Product Description

When partnered with Belkin's WeMo Products, the WeMo Motion Sensor turns home appliances and electronic devices on or off as soon as it detects movement. The sensor plugs into an outlet and detects motion up to 10 feet away. It then sends a wireless signal to the control switch (sold separately) to turn the connected device either on or off. A free WeMo app offers wireless control of your home electronic devices, allowing you to use your smartphone or tablet to program a light to turn on when you walk into the house or a fan to turn off when you leave.

Motion Sensor Turns Electronic Devices On/Off

The WeMo Motion Sensor is designed to be used with Belkin's WeMo family of products or WeMo Switch (sold separately) to give you wireless control of home appliances, lighting, and electronic devices. The sensor detects movement up to 10 feet away and wirelessly signals the control switch to turn the connected device on or off, depending on your preference. The sensor's 6-foot cord lets you place it in the optimal position.

To get started, simply plug the sensor's A/C module into an outlet in your home and position the sensor. Next, download the free WeMo app from the Apple app store or Android Market to your smartphone or tablet device. Connect the sensor to your home Wi-Fi network and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

If you've already connected a WeMo Switch to your home network, you can use your smartphone or tablet to tell the sensor what to do, like have a heater turn off when you exit a room.

Control Devices Using Your Smartphone or Tablet

Not only can the WeMo Motion Sensor connect to your home Wi-Fi network, but it also connects to mobile Internet networks so you can program the sensor to turn devices on or off even if you're away from home.

Add Multiple Sensors for Increased Control

WeMo is completely modular, allowing you to control as much or as little of your house as you like. Supplementary sensors can be added to provide control of more areas of your home. Additionally, multiple switches can be linked to one sensor--turn on a light and heater or a set of lights at the same time with only one sensor.

Enjoy Easy Connectivity with Belkin WeMo Products

The Belkin WeMo product family works with your existing home Wi-Fi network and mobile internet, allowing you to control home electronics devices and appliances right from your smartphone. WeMo also works with IFTTT, connecting your home electronics to a whole world of online apps.

Compatibility Information

The Belkin WeMo Motion Sensor is compatible with Apple devices (iOS 4.1 and higher) and Android-based devices (4.3 and higher).

Bought 2 of these…

UNIT 1:

Using this on iOS7 with the latest version of the app… Updated the firmware.

Attempt 1: The unit detected motion non-stop. Even when placed in a closed box.

Contacted support - told to re-install everything.

Attempt 2: Non stop motion detection.

Attempt 3: Finally! It worked… For 6 hours, then was "offline."

Despite the directions from support - couldn't turn on remote access for IFTTT integration.

UNIT 2:

Same, out of the box.

I bought the sensor and wall switch. I wanted to turn the ceiling lights on in a room adjacent to a curved central staircase so when I walk up and down the stairs at night, the light turns on and off. I was going to cut a hole in the baseboard molding at the base of the staircase and aim the sensor up the staircase. I had planned to run the wire under the house and use a regular stereo headphone extension cable for the distance I needed. The good news is that the cable that plugs into the wall outlet from the motion sensor uses a standard headphone cable and you can extend it as long as you need it. I used a 20' stereo headphone cable and it worked fine. The bad news is that the motion sensor is not sensitive enough to pick up motion the distance of a full staircase. I ended up putting the sensor at the top of the stairs so it only really works when I come down the stairs in the middle of the night (and not when I go up the stairs). This works fine with setup from an iPhone but the wall wort / motion sensor seems bigger than it really needs to be and a bit unsightly.

Things I would like to see from Belkin:
1. Small cordless, battery operated motion sensors with pivot function (up/down) so it can be pointed in a particular direction. I would also like to see some ability to customize the sensor field sensitivity and range. I would like the ability to make the field narrower or wider depending on the application and dictate how far away I want the senor to pick up motion (within reason). I think 10' is too short. The technology is definitely out there for a longer range wireless device. I bought some cheap HarborFreight wireless motion sensor made by BunkerHill for $12.99 and it has a motion range of at least 25' and a wireless range of about 400'.

I have this Belkin WeMo Senor paired with a WeMo Light Switch in my bedroom. As others have mentioned, the WeMo app needs work. It is unstable and erratic during the setup phase, but once you manage to get the devices configured, it runs fine. To set up, plug in the device, open the WiFi settings on your phone or tablet and locate the SSID being broadcast by the WeMo. Connect to it and go back to the WeMo app to connect to your home WiFi. At this point, that's where the problems come in. It'll say it's trying to connect and will spend a minute or two looking for your WeMo devices. It may report that it can't find any or even crash. (It has done it for both of my WeMo products.) I got a message that it was unsuccessful and for me to try again, but the background window said "Setup Successful" (see gallery).

It will also require a new firmware update if you are adding a new product from the WeMo line. There's no progress indicator for the download. All is says is wait up to 10 minutes and go play some Angry Birds. I'm not kidding, it really does say that. So, all in all the setup portion of the app is a giant cluster. Once you get past if, everything should be OK. The Remote Access privileges may become lost when adding a new device. I had to turn Remote Access off and then back on in order for my devices to be seen again over my mobile network (AT&T 4G). Fortunately, you only ever have to set up a new device a few times.

I set up the Motion Sensor to control a light in my bedroom. You can set up rules for what it does. When motion detected, turn light on then several options: off immediately (don't know why you'd do this), after 1 minute, 5, 10, 15, 30, 1 hour, or never. There's no way to enter your own delay.

The motion sensor arrived but it was not in the original box. All items including the instructions were covered in dust. Sensor had splatters of some dried liquid on it and it's rubberized base was dirty. Not impressive for something sold as NEW.

The description of the item states:
"Get smartphone notifications when motion is detected at home. Know when kids arrive home. Know when Grandpa wakes up."

I set up motion activated email alerts based on the instructions (the motion sensor despite being used, does appear to work), but I never received any emails from the device. In desperation I found the app for If This, Then That (IFTTT) and I was able to set up a recipe to send me alerts. That combination of motion sensor and IFTTT did work and I received email notifications when the sensor detected motion. I'm disappointed that I had to find software to "patch" my "new" device.

I love Amazon and order from them often, but this was a huge disappointment. I gave it two stars because the sensor appears functional with the IFTTT workaround. Otherwise, I would have given them one star.
