I have used this on 3 different machines in my house. One is my desktop that no longer has built in wi-fi and the other 2 are laptops with built in wi-fi (one with G and the other with N). I am currently switching between 2 routers in my house, a D-link Dir-655 and a Netgear N750. Both are wireless N with the Netgear supposedly giving faster speeds (however it is plagued with other issues!).
Installing the adapter was effortless on all my machines. I never even used the included disc. Just plugged it into a USB port and a few minutes later it was fully installed (all my machines use Windows 7 Home 64bit). In every case, I had to go into my network adaptor setting and activate it which didn;t suprise me especially with my 2 laptops that already have built in wi-fi cards.
Using the adaptor I couldn't really tell much of a differnece between the speeds of my laptops. That was a bit suprising on my laptop that only has wireless G as I was expecting speeds to be closer to my other laptop with wireless N. In repeated tests using different speedtest webisites, I was avaerging around 14 to 15mbps download speeds and 6mbps upload speeds using my laptop with either the wireless G or the adaptor. The speeds did not improve one bit.
On my other laptop, I saw no improvements in download speed between my built in adaptor and the belkin but I got much better results overall compared to my other laptop. I was getting speeds in the 40mbps range which even shocked me. The only difference I saw was that my built in adaptor seemed to offer more consistent speeds where the Belkin seemd to be all over the map. But again, in normal every day usage, I could not tell much of a difference in speeds when just browsing the web.
My desktop is hard wired to my router so I obviously saw a a dropoff in peformance but its nice to have the Belkin available just in case I ever need to shut off my ethernet adaptor for some strange reason.
I have used other adaptors in the past when I was moving to a more wireless environment (which I have since moved back to wired where I can) and the other ones I tried were always a pain to use. I have an older linksys one that requires their software to be installed which was horrible and I could never maintain a connection. The fact that you can use the belkin without adding any software is a huge plus and I haven't had any of the dropped connections like I experienced with others. Any dropped connection I get right now are directly related to the netgear n750 router.
I like this adaptor and will probably keep it plugged into my desktop for now since I had no benefit with my laptops. with a product this good, maybe they have a router I should look at?!
Edit*** October 24, 2011***
I wanted to give an update on this adpater as I've had finally found success with a home router that is stable and working well. Previosuly I had tried the adpater paired with 2 different router I own. I D-Link Dir-655 and a Netgear N750. As I stated before, I was able to get decwent speeds with this using one of my laptops and a desktop but my older laptop would only get G speeds.
Since my original update, Netgear FINALLY updated its firmware for its plagues N750 router and now it has become one of the most stable and fastest routers I've ever owned. It has remained stable for over 2 weeks now so I decided to try the adapter with my older laptop again since it is the only device in my house either not hardwired or running a built in N adapter.
My old Dell laptop has all USB 2.0 inputs and I tried the adapter in all of them and got the same results. With my newly working router, I was able to get 32mbps avaerage download speeds and 5.5 to 6.5mbps upload speeds according to speedtest.net. These download speeds are more than twice as fast as laptops built in wirelss G card so this adapter definitley works.
If I compare this speeds to my wired desktop, which gets anywhere fron 45mbps to 50 mbps down, the wireless speed isn't that bad.
I really like this adapter and it has become a permanent part of my older laptop now. It has been 1 week and I have had no issues with needing to reboot my laptop, reinstall anything or even remember that it is there!
This is the best wireless adapter I have used so far.
