Book Description

Aerofax Series August 28, 2004
This joint Bell and Boeing project was established in 1982 in response to the Joint Services Advanced Vertical Lift Program covering a wide performance envelope and multiple tasks. The answer came in the form of the V-22 tilt-rotor, a concept tested earlier by Bell with their 1977 XV-15. The transport aircraft style fuselage of the V-22, able to carry 24 troops, is topped by a wing with a complex flap/aileron system and two swivelling pods housing Rolls-Royce turboshaft engines, each driving enormous three-bladed prop-rotors. The intention was that the USAF would receive the CV-22B for special missions work, the US Marine Corps the MV-22B assault transports and the US Navy the HV-22B CSAR/fleet logistics version, but the technologically challenging program has been set back by fatal accidents and an 18 month grounding while flight safety issues were addressed. However, it is set to recommence a restricted development program with the intention that the production aircraft will begin to be delivered at the end of 2003 and gain initial operating capability by 2005, making this comprehensive new book a timely in-depth coverage of the aircraft.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book, August 17, 2004
This review is from: Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey (Aerofax Series) (Paperback)
Bill Norton, the author of this book is particularly well qualified, He is a retired USAF officer, a highly respected flight test engineer, an accomplished aviation writer, and worked on the V-22 Osprey program.

This is a truly outstanding book, which chronicles the history of the program in much detail. The technical description of the unique V-22 is superb, as are the many photographs and diagrams. While covering a complex subject, the prose is readable and the book is well-organized.

This book is a must-have for the aviation enthusiast with an interest in the V-22 Osprey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but dated, April 8, 2010

This review is from: Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey (Aerofax Series) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book of the history of the V-22 Osprey. The first section traces the history of Verticle Take Off and Landing (VTOL) and tilt rotor history. The Osprey is not the first of these planes to fly, but it is certainly the biggest and the only one to have been delpoyed.

Book is printed on high glossy paper, very detailed narrative about the plane, tons of statistics, excellent color photos of the interior, engines, crew, camoflage colors, cockpit detail, you name it, its here.

The one draw back of this book was that it was published in 2004, prior to the actual deployment of the Osprey. Since the plane/helicopter has been so widely criticised in Congress & the press, has it proven itself? Is it worth the money in relation to how much more each one costs vs. helicopters? These are very important aspects of the craft.

If you don't want or need that kind of background or analysis, I recommend the book as very good source of the developmental problems of the plane, and how capable it is to supporting our Marines. The subject of tiltrotor aviation can be technical, but the book explains it all in clear terms.
