Bella Donna is an immensely good read. Robert Hichens' ability to build suspense and develop characters is superb. My only complaint about this product is the "package"--it is a scanned book that has been printed with all the appeal of a washing machine manual! Am certainly grateful for keeping the book in print, but the insensitive selection of text font and the deadly cover "design" make this book hard to get into. (If I hadn't just read The Paradine Case, I don't think I would have opened the cover of this unappealing book.) I'm sure Hichens' original edition had merit as far as book design is concerned...I only wish the packagers of this current edition had taken the time to reference that somehow. Also, and completely unforgivable, there is an erroneous author bio on the back cover!! Robert Smythe Hichens was NOT the quartermaster on the Titantic, that was another Robert Hichens (a contemporary, actually) who was a mariner with a rather chequered career. RSH was an erudite and very respected, prolific writer. To the publisher I have to insist that a book IS indeed judged by its cover.

There's a lot to admire in Hichens' s writing, but the story is a sad mix of sensuousness and heavy-handed moralizing.

This was a great story once I got past the lengthy descriptions and down to what was actually happening. The story is about a woman who lived a life the way she wanted to live it, and was looked down upon by society because of it. She finally finds a man who is willing to love and forgive her in spite of her past. Unfortunatley, she has not changed and it was frustrating to watch her do the things she did, but it was a very interesing story. As I said, it was "wordy" but nonetheless a good read.

Much is left to the reader's imagination. Characters you love and love to hate. The feelings expressed start
creeping to your own soul. Recommend for anyone who has been obsessively in love.
