First, I absolutely love Lucy Liu as 'Joan' Watson. A very modern retelling of such a classic mystery - detective story and adds a new level of intimacy in the iconic partnering of Sherlock and Watson.

While they deviate greatly from the original story lines and take a lot of liberties with the relationships for the characters the new story lines are still very well written as well as the overall story arc of the two lead characters.

The show is still great! I would caution the writers though; There is no one with the extraordinary powers of observation and deduction as Holmes. Watson could not even come close. Be careful.

Just a cool, modern take on the famous literary characters. Miller is the better actor, but we have sooooo much fun laughing at Liu's staggering high heel collection. Her Watson isn't less smart than Holmes, just smart in a different way. There is some humor, some creepiness, some drama and some dark soul delving. Very entertaining and worth your time.

If you watch 'Elementary' and you never read the complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, you may be missing the joke in this. The Watson written by Conan Doyle would never have been so openly critical of the professional craziness of Conan Doyle's 'Holmes' as the Watson character played by Mz. Liu is of this 'Holmes'. Also the police detectives of Conan Doyle's 'Holmes' were almost never even remotely capable which is why Sherlock Holmes of his day was ever so wildly popular in The Strand Magazine where they were originally published. The public likes when the cops are made to be bumbling oafs without a clue. Current day police use forensic analysis, and computerized files that police a hundred years ago would have laughed off as unreliable fiction as we would consider such nonsense as Tarot Cards or Ouji Boards today.

TV script writers need more intricate case plots than the ones we see here, that would be the kind of Knotty Problem the mind of a borderline psychotic investigator who uses Cocaine to cure boredom might best be counted on to solve. Holmes was a genius in the definition that genius is the capacity for infinite detail in the pursuit of his work. But that should always make Holmes a bit crazier to us, not more genius, for that was the genius of what Arthur Conan Doyle created in Sherlock Holmes.

The writers of SHERLOCK with Benedict Cumberbach, seem to get that better, but to be fair they only have to cough up three such episodes a year while Elementary has so many more to produce.

The plot needs to thicken quite a lot. Also Sherlock role seems for to agreeable I liked his eccentricities far more then this seasons watered down version. Love Joans adaptation of sherlocks ways. I appreciate the no nonsense less emotion more machanical woman.

Jonny Lee Miller is still great as Sherlock. I have enjoyed him tremendously from day 1 with this show. I did enjoy Lucy L as Watson too but the show's creators have done something inexplicable with her starting with this season. Not only are Holmes and Watson not sharing quarters any longer BUT Watson is now considered about as good as Holmes by the NYPD and is being hired as a consulting detective by it. This is, of course, NOWHERE in the Sherlock Holmes stories and it is taking a much huger liberty with the source material than moving it to present day NYC and/or changing the sex of Watson and Moriarty. Watson has become this good in a mere two years as well! To add insult to injury, Sherlock now has a new woman assistant and I don't see any need for her on the show whatsoever. She is supposed to be bright but seems rather dim to me.

I have knocked only one star off this review though. In the prior two seasons, I gave it the five stars. But I am really worried that the creators are busily messing too much with a concept that was working just fine without additional tinkering. Nevertheless, with Miller still in the lead role there is still an enormous amount to like. I hope they bring Sherlock's brother back as that was one character who was being well developed. He was also being played by the wonderful Brit actor, Rhys Ifan. Aidan Quinn is still fine as Gregson too as is the actor who plays his detective. These characters were changed from the source material from being fools to being competent police people. That was another liberty taken which worked ok. But there is only so much tinkering Sherlock can handle. Enough already!

This season is slow. The addition of a third 'main' character reduces interest. She is not very likable. I stopped playing the last episode twice, went off to do some chores, and came back. Yawn.

Writing is not clear. Plots are clunky and logic sketchy. If you are going to write a Sherlock character, you need to be brilliant. Hard to believe the personality change in Watson. She went from a wise, compassionate person to an unpleasnt flip, sarcastic woman. Author Cannon Doyle did not find it necessary to transform his characters' personalites and the story is stronger because of it. His Holmes was always a well mannered, brilliant man. Neither he nor Watson were jerks. Watson was the comic relief, wheras in the BBC Sherlock, Mrs. Hudson adds levity. This version has none. The new character, Kitty, has cliche lines and only adds to the unplesantness, though her character really could transofrm with good therapy. It is not reccomended that a sexual abuse victim go directly into a group, too much possibility for retruamtization. She needs trauma therapy to stabalize her first. The writers ought to hire an experienced Mental Heath consultant for that character's evolution. They have an audience, good actors, but poor plots, I hope they get with it soon or I'll give up.
