Biography

Al Green was one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s. His emotive voice crooned some of the greatest love ballads of the decade, particularly during his peak period between 1971-75. His big breakthrough was his third album Al Green Gets Next to You (1971), which included “Tired of Being Alone”. Let’s Stay Together (1972) included a title track that topped the pop charts, and a beautiful cover… Read more in Amazon's Al Green Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection that is out of print, but out of sight!, April 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Belle Album! Have a Good Time (Audio CD)
Sadly, this double collection from Al Green is no longer available. (I was able to find it used in an actual "record" store that specializes in vinyl and imports.) What can I say about these two albums? The Belle Album is simply Al's best from his "secular" period. Actually, I hesitate to call it secular, as the album contains inspirational music every bit as powerful as anything he has yet produced in his "gospel" period. In particular, check out "Chariots of Fire," "Feels like Summer," and the title track. These cuts run the entire gamut of human emotions and soul stylings, and there are five other tracks that rank among his all-time best on just The Belle Album! Have a Good Time (which comprises the first half of the CD, as it is older) probably would have been Al's best during the 1970's had The Belle Album never been produced. In particular, "Hold on Forever" pierces the heart with its sheer beauty. My only criticism of this collection remains the unfortunate fact that The Belle Album tends to overshadow Have a Good Time. HaGT represents Al perfecting his earlier formula, while Belle established Al Green as a major creative force in the genres of soul and gospel. Since these two album undoubtedly represent Al's best work of the 70's, I highly recommend tracking down this out of print set so you will be able to have them on the same CD.
