Editorial Reviews

BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode). Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. Academy Award winner Rachel Portman (Emma) delivers one of her most sumptuous scores for this period story of illicit love.

5.0 out of 5 stars BELLE IS A BEAUTY November 2, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
The great Rachel Portman continues to compose some of the best music for films available, her sense of character and drama as sharp as in her various masterpieces, such as CHOCOLAT, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, BEL AMI and others. BELLE is one of the best films of 2014, an acute appraisal of race and class in 18th century England, and Portman's score is one of the film's principal characters.

Rachel Portman is one of my favorite movie score/soundtrack composers,so her score/music cd for "Belle" was as beautiful as the movie! Seeing the movie 1st.was what prompted me to buy the cd ,ASAP! Nothing but praise for both of them! Her music is well suited for period & historic movies.

Soaringly beautiful, richly developed melodies evoking a time past. Rachel Portman, an award-winning composer with many film score credits to her name, does it again.

This movie is well done. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is an excellent actress. Portrays the many struggles oppressed people suffer, but also the internal struggles as well. Good movie.
