In 2007, renowned Irish company Belleek will release 15 limited edition pieces to commemorate the company's 150th anniversary. Each piece represents one decade from the company's history, and many historic forms are being revived after years of retirement for the Archive Collection. Only 2,000 of these eight-inch plates will be produced, each one numbered and backstamped, making this a true collector's item. The textured border of the plate shows a basket-weave pattern with hand-painted green shamrocks, while the center displays a historic view of a famous Irish hotel and bridge with the bottle-shaped Belleek pottery kilns in the background. The scene is inspired by an engraving formerly used to adorn the stands of Belleek teapots.
Crafted in Ireland, the Pottery Scene plate is made of parian china, invented in Great Britain in the 1840s for sculpting classical figurines. Because of the china's marble-like translucence, the name derived from the Greek island of Paros, famous for its prized white marble.
