"Regencies by Kasey Michaels rank very high on my list of all-time favorites." -- Sandy Coleman, All About Romance

From the Author

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Kasey Michaels' "Alphabet Regencies" are classic Traditional Regencies, not Regency historicals, and they center on the foibles of the day, the eccentrics that populated the drawing rooms (and there were many of these silly people, especially when Kasey is the one telling their stories). The love scenes fade to black with the reader encouraged to use her or his imagination to fill in the blanks -- oh come on, you know how to do that, right! Lighthearted character studies, these "Alphabet Regencies" are a fine introduction to the Regency Era. They're also a lot of fun. Happy Reading!

*Some Spoilers* I am a huge Kasey Michaels fan! Although this book isn't as humorous as some of her other books, it does have its funny moments. Miss Amanda Boynton is being pressured to marry by her stepfather, who has allowed the lovely home she grew up in to fall into ruin. Instead of allowing herself to be used by her stepfather, she decides to turn the tables on him so she shows up at Almack's in a very inappropriate dress and once there, dances the waltz without permission with the first rake who notices her. This just happens to be Jared Delaney, Lord Storm, who has a very "stormy" reputation and personality. As soon as the night at Almack's is finished, Amanda has plans to run away to her country home and get her beloved horse, Tempest.

Once Jared finds out she is planning to run away during the night, he waits outside her home to make sure she has an escort on her journey. Amanda doesn't want his company so along the way, she runs off and leaves him. But he catches up with her eventually and they continue along on their journey bickering all the way. There are a couple of very funny scenes involving Tempest.

Unbeknownst to Amanda, Jared has decided he will have her one way or the other. So, he basically leaves her no option but to allow him to take her to his home where she is led to believe she will have to become his mistress. However, he has other plans for her - just wanted to shake her up a bit. In fact, Jared has a special license in his pocket and plans to marry Amanda once he arrives at his estate. He even has his aunt waiting on him there to add countenance to their situation.

Jared and Amanda do get married pretty early in the story.

****POTENTIAL SPOILERS ****

I usually like Kasey Michaels' books, but not this one. The h/H were both immature very annoying. They call each other names, insult each other and play nasty tricks on each other. These types of actions can be very funny if handled correctly, but these fall flat, which is surprising because Ms. Michaels usually excels at this.

The h hit the H several times, acted like a spoiled, brainless brat, and was thoroughly unlikeable, in my opinion. The H was no better; he was sarcastic, condescending, didn't listen to others, and often talked like an idiot. To be fair, Ms. Michaels did give both the h/H some good qualities, but the bad outweighed the good.

It was the same with the h/H's friends. They were at times likeable, but more often they were presented with very grating, negative characteristics. The villainous cousin and stepfather were a problem, as well. Both were supposed to be evil in the beginning, but by the end, they were written as weak and relatively harmless characters. The former mistress was the only character who seemed consistent.

The plot had potential, and I usually like a sense of the ridiculous in some books, but this plot had too many holes and the heavy-handed attempts at humour made the book boring and tedious. I hated this book and I had to force myself to
finish it.

Ms. Michaels can and has written much better than this. She has a deft touch with writing light-hearted romps, so it is surprising that this one fell far short of the mark. I don't recommend it to anyone but a diehard fan who wants to collect all of Ms Michaels' work.

Amanda and Jared meet at Almacks when she makes a late entrance with the intention of embarrassing her step-father with her wildly inappropriate dress. She resents that her step-father plans to sell her to the highest-bidder and her intention is to thwart him by creating a scandal and running away to live with her nanny. Jared is immediately smitten and decides to aid her plans with the intention of marrying her.

The first half of the book is their meeting at Almacks, their adventures in running away and eventually marrying. The second half of the book consists of a disagreement that causes Jared to abandon his new bride and head back to London while she stays behind with Aunt Aggie and redecorates at the estate. Then they make up and have to foil the evil machinations of Jared's cousin and ex-mistress.

This is the fourth book I've read by Kasey Michaels and I liked the previous ones. She writes with a tongue-in-cheek, dry sense of humor that I usually like. But this book is so dry it felt utterly flat and devoid of feeling. I hated the way the characters called each other names like "idiot." Jared speaks so disrespectfully to his Aunt Agatha it grated on my nerves. And I really dislike kidnapping scenes - that's a matter of personal preference but combined with the other things I didn't like about this book it was just the final nail in the coffin.

I'm giving this two stars instead of one because I generally liked Amanda, Aunt Agatha and the secondary romance with Bo and Anne. The dryness (aka flatness) of this book is immediately apparent, so if you read the sample and enjoy it then you might like this book.
