First complete Norma with La Regina di belcanto, March 12, 2002
This review is from: Bellini: Norma (Audio CD)
This recording is NOT perfect. It's live, there is noise, scratches, the conductor's tempi are sloooooooooow.....
BUT:
Callas' first complete Norma is simply GLORIOUS. Being in PERFECT voice nothing seems to be too difficult for the Queen of opera. The trills, the dramatic coloratura, the high Cs and the stupendous high D closing act one are mesmerizing. No wobble anywhere to be heard. Just supreme, dramatic singing. Callas was so much more than a "good actress". She was, is and always will be La Reine d'opera, La Regina di belcanto, opera's greatest jewel.
Kurt Baum is not a good choice for Pollione. His voice is loud, garish, his Italian is VERY bad and his "fighting" Callas (My high notes are better than yours! Etc.) is simply stupid because he had no chance against this goddess.
Simionato shines as the young Adalgisa, it made me wonder why she wasn't asked to be Adalgisa in Callas' first studio-Norma instead of Stignani.
