4.0 out of 5 stars
for Gruberova fans only, July 22, 2001
This review is from: Bellini - I Puritani / Gruberova, Lavender, Kim, Ellero D'Artegna, Lytting, Luisi (Audio CD)
This is a fine version of Puritani - it was taped live at a
concert performance in Munich - the sound is excellent and the
audience on its best behavior applause are minimal - chorus and
orchestra are excellent and beautifully conducted by Fabio Luisi
- the score is presented virtually complete. Edita Gruberova is
definitely the star of the evening - she is in fine voice and
nothwithstanding a few wiry top notes she sings with musicality
and delicacy - some of her high pianossimo notes are stunning
and leave you panting - she is dramatically involved - a great
performance. Unfortunately the rest of the cast is not at her
level vocally but is still adequate. Justin Lavender has a light
and dryish voice but copes well with the high tessitura and
sings with elegance. Ettore Kim has a dark rich voice but sounds
rather throathy and is a little ungainly at times. Francesco
Ellero d'Artegna has a dull grayish voice but sings well. At
that price it can be recommended only to Gruberova fans espe-
cially that the Sills/Gedda/Rudel version is now available at
mid-price with a complete text.
