Book Description

March 2000
The Surrealists' fascination with dolls and machines that resembled humans is especially evident in the work of Hans Bellmer (1902-1975), the subject of this comprehensive monograph. Rejecting the Nazis' Aryan ideals, the artist spent the years after 1933 creating disturbing dolls out of wax, wood, flax, plaster and glue--equipped with wigs and glass eyes. Photographs of these fetishistic simulacra were published in Minotaure, the Surrealists' magazine, and eagerly supported by members of Andre Breton's circle. After immigrating to Paris, Bellmer continued to develop his erotic obsessions through his art, now influenced by the writings of the Marquis de Sade and Georges Bataille, and began to collaborate with his companion, the German artist Unica Zurn. Deeply involved in Freudian discourse, his drawings, lithographs and photographs investigate psychoanalytic theories around hysteria and transference and reveal a singular exploration into the relationship between language and the body.

5.0 out of 5 stars most complete bellmer work to date, October 10, 2006
By
This review is from: Hans Bellmer (Hardcover)
The number of reproductions and the quality of the printing in this book is unsurpassed in any other Bellmer book i have seen. I own seven others, which were nearly impossible to track down, and cost me and arm and a leg.... and if this book were out earlier, this one alone may have completed my Hans Bellmer collection.
for me, what really drew me in to getting this book was the number of paintings that are reproduced- this is rarity, as most books focus either exclusively on his drawings or photography.
the range of work represented in this book is astonishing, and makes it a truly comprehensive retrospective of Bellmers life work. there are examples of his early drawings, portraits, and landscapes- which very early on turn to twisted erotic scenes that develop in intricacy and refinement as the book progresses. many paintings and photgraphs are reproduced- the only thing missing seems to be examples of his etchings (which are collected in the book "Graveur"- definitely up there as one of the best).
the complete text of Bellmer's essay "the Doll" is included, as well as some decent essays by art theorists.

if you are a Bellmer fan, this book is a must have. it is a godsend for people who have been so far unable to find books of his work- and as a person who already owns a bunch, i can tell you that it is a unbeatable purchase even if you already have a smattering of his books. this is the only one i have been turning to lately, it has basically trumped the others. get it while you still can!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars True surrealism, January 1, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hans Bellmer (Hardcover)
For real Surrealism, please bypass Dali and all such dreck. Go directly to Yves Tanguy. Go directly to Andre Masson, Max Ernst, and Man Ray. And most especially, go to Hans Bellmer, who explored his own deviant impulses to the limit in breathtaking etchings, drawings, paintings, and sculptures that epitomize Surrealism's ambition and goal: giving unmediated voice to the subconscious without restriction or compunction. Not for the squeamish, not for the kids, but if you want to see the absolute peak of Surrealist art, this book is hard to beat.
