This album makes for very pleasant listening, and quite readily proves false the myth that Chinese vocal music is little more than "nasal screeching." Culled from the vast and varied repetoire of Chinese folk music and cinema, "Beloved Chinese Songs" captures the many moods expressed in these genres -- exuberant, wistful, humorous, poignant. The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York is truly an "army of generals," performing these pieces with both the sensitivity and exuberance requisite of such music, as well as with the technical mastery achieved by only the best of musicians.

Beloved Chinese songs are songs sung in Chinese, I wouldn't have it any other way. To the other reviewers, the songs may be sung in Chinese and you may not understand them; but inside of the CD the meaning of the songs are explained in English which makes the songs more enjoyable. Listening to these beautiful songs, and melodies; relaxes me. "Purple bamboo" is my favorite.

I play this album all of the time. The music is delightful and, when I visited the PRC, I actually heard people on the street singing some of these songs.

I own an eclectic collection of international music and this was a wonderful addition. Traditional music, relaxing sounds, stimulating rhythms - very nice if you are inclined to enjoy Asian styles.

...the recording is off, the instruments are too loud overwhelming the voices. Otherwise, the music is absolutely beautiful.

Are the Chinese Lyric included in the CD? Thanks.

I would like to know if these songs are sung in English, or in Chinese, or both. The one review already online does not answer this question.
