Book Description

February 12, 2011
Set against the opulent background of the Golden Era of the antebellum South, this novel explores the culture and history of early 19th century Natchez, Mississippi. The story features three people: the auburn-haired daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, and the two men who desire to possess her; each in his own way.

The web of intrigue and passion that evolves forms a backdrop of drama as each of them struggle to attain their own goals, until they are met with a disaster so cataclysmic that it threatens to wipe them from the face of the earth.

The story takes us from the fine mansions of Natchez proper to the tawdry lawlessness of Natchez-under-the-Hill; the river port where fortunes could be made and lost in the blink of an eye. It includes the bawdy houses serving the riverport where the most perverse vices could be satisfied.

Because of the huge impact of the Underground Railroad on the Southern economy, as thousands of slaves were siphoned off from the numbers working in the cotton fields every year, and also because woven into the entire novel are the stories of men and women living in slavery, whether their status was high or low, the plight of the black slaves is woven through the fabric of the book.

From the Author

"Beloved Destiny" was an absolute labor of love for me. The atmosphere and culture of the deep South, and most particularly Natchez, Mississippi have always captivated my imagination. Natchez itself has had many functions over the years. Occupied by Indian tribes for hundreds of years, there are traces of that culture in every place-name in the territory.

The geographical location of the city, high on a bluff overlooking the  Mississippi River made it a most desirable location, fought over by Indian and French until finally becoming an American territory in the early 1800's.

Although I thought I already knew a lot about this region, as I researched further into the history  of Natchez, I found that it was much more than even I had thought.

So it was a pure joy to learn more about this fascinating place and add to the history a love story which was so obviously guided by destiny. That fact was the rationale for the title itself .

About the Author

Carol Ann Fears grew up in Louisville, KY, home of the Kentucky Derby and good bourbon whiskey. Carol could read long before she entered elementary school, and was frequently found curled up in an armchair with a stack of books on the table beside her. Her mother called her a bookworm, and in fact, she was exactly that.

Carol Ann began writing short stories during her primary school years, and continued as she entered high school. Her talents began to be recognized during those years, as some of her teachers noted her flair for writing fiction.  Her other love was the piano, and she accompanied the high school glee club and also performed at conventions and other local functions.

She entered Murray State University as an English major, where she was encouraged to continue with her writing, even though her English professor occasionally raved over split infinitives or other flagrant grammatical blunders.

Life intervened as Carol married and started a family. She and her husband, Perry, were blessed with four wonderful children, two boys and two girls. As soon as her youngest child entered elementary school, Carol returned to her education at Kentucky Wesleyan College, this time attaining a degree in nursing. Over the next 25 years, she continued to write, starting with her memoirs, poetry and short stories. She enlisted the aid of a tutor, a retired English teacher, to help her polish her writings.

Carol Ann has had short stories published on line, including: "Play Date", "In the Place of the Sun Dogs", and "The Old Man's Tale". "Existential Snare", published in Everyday Fiction was described as "a brilliant piece of writing" by the editors.
In December of 2010 she finally made the leap, writing a full-length novel entitled "Beloved Destiny" set in 1830's Natchez, Mississippi. "Beloved Destiny" has been published as an e-book on Kindle Direct Publishing.

Usually before I start a book, I like to read the synopsis on the book jacket or on the internet in the case of an e-book. I like to get a feel for the story before I dive in. In the case of Beloved Destiny by Carol Ann Fears, I was excited because it seemed like it was going to be right up my alley - historical fiction with a little romance thrown in. The story revolves around 17 year old Carina Blanchett and her family who live on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi in the early 19th century. Carina was born to a privileged life, and her family expects her to marry someone of her own station even though she is in love with someone else, but we soon learn that wealth and class does not necessarily make a gentleman and that a person's qualities should matter far more than money and background. Will Carina learn to love or will love eventually find its way back to her?

I really wanted to like this book; however, although Fears definitely has a talent for the written word, there were just too many areas where this book fell short in my eyes. Don't get me wrong - this book was not boring or poorly written by any means, but there was just no magic to the story. In a nutshell, there were two words that came to mind as I read this book: predictable and formulaic. I don't mind the traditional boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy can't have girl, but eventually boy gets girl plot, but I like stories that are not quite so predictable and where there are interesting side plots that really flesh out the story. If the story had been longer, Fears could have delved much deeper into the fascinating history of the pre-Civil War era of the South. What she does describe is well done, but I yearned for so much more. For example, I was very excited to hear mention of the Underground Railroad when I read the synopsis for this book, and I looked forward to some excitement in the plot as a result. However, there were only three brief references to one slave's involvement in hiding runaways on their way north, and nothing ever developed from that.

I was also disappointed in the main character, Carina. When introduced to her at the beginning of the story, the reader is led to believe that she is not like other southern belles of that era, in that she is intelligent, strong-willed and independent. I thought she was going to be a character to admire - one who would break the mold. However, the next thing you know, she is fainting and swooning into a man's arms in the garden because the sun is hot and she forgot her bonnet. When faced with arranged marriage, I was waiting for her to step up to the plate and tell her family that she wouldn't have anything to do with it, but again she wilted in the heat. And to allow the deception of a happy marriage to continue even after being threatened by her less than loving husband does not make a strong character to be admired in my books. Carina could have been a formidable protagonist who would have given the story some depth and who could have stood for the beginning of women fighting for their rights, but she was not all that much different than the other southern belles. All in all, I liked the characters because each one was different and interesting in his or her own way, but I am sure that if this story was longer and more detailed and complex, I would have loved the characters.

If you want a really light read with a good old fashioned romance, you may want to give Beloved Destiny a try, but if you want something with a little more substance, this is not the book for you.

Carol Ann Fears grew up in Kentucky, where she majored in English at Murray State University. Before finishing her education, Carol took some time off to get married, and after four children, a nursing degree and a move to Kenosha, WI she now lives again in western Kentucky with her husband, Perry, and their two Jack Russell terriers and four cats. After retiring from nursing in 2007, she decided to return to her love of writing and completed Beloved Destiny in four months. She is currently working on a second novel set in 14th century England. This novel is a must-read for anyone who likes their romance sprinkled with a good serving of history. The narrative takes place in Natchez, Mississippi in the 1830's. Carina is the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner who comes of age in this time of peace and prosperity. Carina is high spirited and independent, and becomes involved with two young men. One is rich, and the other is not. Carina's parents try to encourage a match with the rich man, but her independent spirit prevents them from manipulating her as they might choose to do. As the story moves along there are a lot of twists and turns in the story that keep the reader wanting to know what will happen to these people. The characters are engaging and fully fleshed out, which leaves the reader hoping that the story will turn out the way he or she wants. There are moments of high drama, devastating anguish, as well as disaster on a monumental scale that the characters are forced to live through. It is a compelling story of love and betrayal, of love and hate, and of love and survival. I highly recommend it for the intelligent reader who want to be entertained as well as gain some understanding of these times.
