5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it !
I actually loved this book. Once I started reading it , I couldn't put it down. The characters all came together in the book. I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

2.0 out of 5 stars Endless sex, no plot
Typical pirate romance--studmuffin pirate takes 17 year old virgin captive. Too noble to force her into sex, nevertheless within minutes she's Awakened and Just Can't Help Herself. Lust is labeled love and the rest of the book is a series of redundant sex scenes. Lots of coincidental reunions and convenient deaths.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money!, June 4, 2000

This is so poorly written I found myself constantly re-reading sentences trying to figure out what the author is trying to say. For example: "Both made Leana's heartbeats become erratic, so remembering how he could send her senses to reeling with the seduction of his eyes and how passion burned so within them." This may not seem that bad but is a constant writing style that gets tiring to decipher.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Beloved Embrace (Zebra Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Having teeth pulled or studying the nomenclature of minerals would be less painful than trying to read this book. Based off of the description on the back cover I thought it would've been a great story. Unfortunately, the execution of it is horrible.

She spends too much time describing the scene and not enough into character development. Personally, I think the first 2 chapters could've been thrown out all together & the important parts worked into the story later when we actually got to know our characters and care about them. Some of the scenes appear like they are just placed in there so the characters can explain things, such as what Big Thicket is, which only makes the passage didactic (and there are plenty of these in the story).

I know when we read a book we must suspend disbelief, but I expect the character interactions to be somewhat believable. A banker in the 1800's isn't going to give a textbook answer to his 15-year-old stepdaughter about a place. And I doubt a father is going to tell his daughter things that'll make her worry. etc...

The word structure is very awkward. If I wanted to have to dissect things in a sentence instead of just reading over it once I'll read one of my upper level science textbooks. It really breaks up the flow of the story when you're trying to figure out what the author is trying to say.

Regardless, I usually try to finish the books I pick up. This book.. I didn't even try finishing it. I'll cut my losses w/the $7, I'm not going to waste hours of my life trying to get through this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars What an Awful Read!!, December 24, 2008

This review is from: Beloved Embrace (Zebra Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I can see I am not alone in my view regarding this book. It was one of the worse written books I have ever read. The story was ridiculous, the language absurd, the characters a joke and the entire experience one of total boredom. I actually thought this was a comedy. The interaction between the hero and heroine was bordering on a joke. No one talks or acts like they do using silly endearments and nonsensical words. I am willing to suspend reality in any book I read, but I at least like to enjoy and believe in the reality that has been created. Not a single character or activity in this book came close to anything anyone would ever do. Please save your money - don't even buy this used, unless you enjoy reading 500 pages of nothing both nonsense.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, August 9, 2008
This review is from: Beloved Embrace (Zebra Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book really frustrated me. I was really geared up for the whole pirate thing and then it just dropped me flat.

**SPOILERS**The girl is kidnapped and taken prisoner along with many other women including her mother, these women are all taken to be raped by the crew. She is taken to be raped by the captian, she resists this at first and then like two pages later she is in love and cannot live without this man. Even though he is a rapist and this voyage ends up killing her mother. **SPOILERS END**

The plot just continues on a downward spiral with a few obvious subplots sprinkled in. I really cant find anything redeeming about this book. I would give it negative starts if I could. Save your money!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Grief..., July 24, 2008
By
This review is from: Beloved Embrace (Zebra Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I just bought this book last week. Brand new, off the shelf at Wal-Mart, start reading and, noting the cheesy quality of it right from the start, look at the inside cover and find it was first released back in 1987. I've only read about 140 pages, not at all sure I can force myself to read the other 352. There's several reasons I already don't like it, notwithstanding that in the beginning, a young boy is kidnapped by pirates, ransom is paid and boy does not want to be returned because he enjoys a life of piracy, even though he frets about his family worrying but just allows them to believe he's dead. His "death" ends up killing his mother and he has about 1 paragraph of regret before he and all his pirate cronies attack a passenger ship. They kill innocent people, take the women hostage, putting the older ones in the hold and the younger ones in a cabin where the pirates pick which ones they want to whip and rape.

Brandon chooses Leanna, takes her to his cabin and locks her in and leaves her along where she, instead of being the terrified virgin, paces the cabin all turned on about her impending rape with no concern for her reputation or the fact that Brandon is a pirate who murders innocent people with no apologies or regrets, and who, along with his friends, rapes innocent women on a regular basis. He comes back to the cabin, they have sex and when it's over, she's in love. In fact, she's so in love that she swears no one will ever be able to replace him in her heart and that she'll never love this way again. Please.

While I'm not adverse to a good pirate/damsel in distress story, this verges on hypocrisy. Because, just down the hall, Brandon's mentor is having his own sex with a woman, who also is enjoying herself and, afterward, they decide to hook up too cuz he can't live without her. It just kept getting more and more ridiculous the more I read. If you're interested in the whole pirate thing, Pirate Prince by Gaelen Foley is unputdownable. HIs Wicked Kiss by same author is really good. Captive by Brenda Joyce. There's just a bunch of reading out there better than this. Don't waste your money.
